Tits up! The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel plows along with another solid episode. “Interesting People on Christopher Street” moves the plot along nicely, setting the stage for Susie to take over the world. I feel this won’t end well based on the fact that her former kidnappers are mobsters.
This outing also skims the surface of Susie’s sexuality. Susie remains tight-lipped regarding her preferences, which makes me wonder whether she’s entirely sure herself. I’m glad she called Midge out for making assumptions instead of outright asking. That said, I don’t think Susie would’ve answered her, anyway. I hope we revisit this in future episodes.
“Interesting People on Christopher Street” isn’t as funny or poignant as “Everything Is Bellmore,” but it’s still a consistently heartwarming Maisel episode. For that, I’m grateful.

We open with the strippers at the club where Midge works, performing a group number. There are loads of feather boas, thongs and scanty clothing in every shade of pink. Admittedly, it looks like a great time.
Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) tries to persuade Boise (Santino Fontana) into tightening the ship — there are countless things regarding the show in dire need of fixing. But Boise doesn’t give a rat’s derrière.
Next, Midge goes on a date with a doctor who’s obsessed with flaunting his poorly-accented Spanish at every turn. Susie (Alex Borstein) and Midge craft an elaborate ruse, an escape plan, to get her the hell out of dodge.
It’s movie night at the club, so Midge and Susie chow down on Chinese food while watching Easter Parade with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire. They talk about Midge’s love life and how she’s dating duds as of late. Midge inquires about Susie’s dating history, but the latter puts the kibosh on that query.
Later, Abe (Tony Shalhoub) and Rose (Marin Hinkle) complain to Midge about Susie’s late-night party time in front of the TV. Midge vows she’s looking for an apartment, and Susie emerges to confirm Midge’s statement.
Next, Asher (Jason Alexander) visits Abe at his job. Why? Because the pair are meeting with someone from the FBI. They’ll need to get their stories straight and ensure they’re on the same page. Meanwhile, Joel (Michael Zegen) moves into his new apartment with the help of Mei (Stephanie Hsu). Joel wants to introduce Mei to his parents and finally end Shirley’s incessant meddling.
However, Mei doesn’t want to meet Joel’s parents because of the pervasive racism on prominent display back then (and today). She fears Shirley and Moishe will think a million untoward, racist things about her, even if they don’t say them out loud. Joel tries to reassure Mei, but she leaves.
Meanwhile, Susie has lunch at The Stage Deli with her former kidnappers. They’re all besties now! Susie reveals that Midge’s family drives her nuts, so she needs a new place. Her BFFs inform her they might have an apartment in mind for her.
Midge cruises Christopher Street in search of a place where only ladies meet — for her friend. Suddenly, a dapper man called Lazarus (John Waters) answers Midge’s prayers. There is a bar for only women!
Next, Abe and Asher call Abe’s lawyer (also Midge’s attorney), Michael Kessler (Max Casella), who informs the duo that this FBI thing is “a big fat nothing.” They’ll be in the clear in no time! Asher stays for dinner with Abe, Rose and Midge. Here, we learn that Asher used to date Rose when the latter took a break from Abe.
Of course, this newfound information infuriates Abe, but he attempts to suppress his feelings.
Susie’s besties lead to her an empty, spacious apartment. Well, not empty; it’s home to a pair of pigeons. It needs quite a bit of work, but the view overlooks Times Square, so that’s nifty! The guys believe Susie could make it her headquarters, a.k.a. “Susie Meyerson and Associates.” It’s the dream!

They even offer to let her live there rent-free until she starts accruing money and kickstart her business. Then, they’ll want a small share of the cut. Susie agrees to the deal. Why do I have a bad feeling about this?
Later, Midge takes Susie to the all-ladies establishment. Once Susie spots all the women making out, she knows why Midge brought her here. Midge assumes Susie’s a lesbian, but the latter neither confirms nor denies the assumption. She states that it’s none of Midge’s business. Her dating life is private. Susie asserts she doesn’t need love because her career occupies her free time.
After Midge gives Boise a lesson in etiquette, Susie gets her and Midge’s wages from him. Midge doles out a hilarious set, much to Boise’s dismay, but perhaps he can’t stand seeing a strong woman be funny.
Next, Abe, Asher and Kessler meet with the FBI agent. Things seem to run smoothly until Abe divulges Asher’s involvement in the arson incident. Asher burned the building while Abe watched. Of course, Abe’s feeling petty since he learned about Asher and Rose’s tryst from over three decades ago.
Kessler pulls the agent aside before Abe can inflict more damage and dig a deeper grave for him and Asher. Rose finds the pair arguing and tries to quell the conflict. Abe admits he’s jealous about Asher dating Rose, especially since Asher was a good-looking fella in his day. Asher packs his belongings and leaves in a huff, clearly fed up with Abe’s antics. But not before he gets a brilliant idea for a new play. Abe worries Asher will pen said play about their situation.
Meanwhile, Midge visits Joel’s club and asks her ex-husband if she can perform a 10-minute set with new material. He learns that she’s working at a strip club, which unsettles him. Joel believes it’s a step down from touring with the legendary Shy Baldwin.
Susie writes a list of everything that needs repairs in her new place. She receives a bouquet and a visit from Sophie Lennon (Jane Lynch), who begs Susie to manage her. Nobody will hire her, and even her staff resigned. Sophie’s in a deep, dark place at the moment; her career’s spiraling down the drain. Susie reluctantly agrees to manage Sophie again and will endeavor to get the actress on an NBC game show.
The episode ends with Midge performing her new set at the club to roaring applause. To celebrate, she unwittingly walks into the orchestra pit. Ouch!

If Maisel doesn’t seize the opportunity to have Santino Fontana sing, then I don’t know what we’re doing here. On another note, Tony Shalhoub and Jason Alexander are pitch-perfect together, and their scenes are an episodic highlight for me. I hope we see more Asher at some point.
