The teaser for the fifth season of The Magicians show our favorite characters reeling after the loss of Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph). Fans are sure to be still suffering from Quentin’s selfless act and the beautiful version of “Take on Me” that was sung in his honor at the end of last season. Cue all the tears.

Played over the teaser, we hear Stephanie Quinn (Judith Hoag), Alice’s mother, saying, “No one gets to tell you how to grieve. Only you know where it’s going to take you. If you need to do something crazy to get through it, do something crazy, okay?” We see Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley), Margo (Summer Bishil), Eliot (Hale Appleman), Julia (Stella Maeve) and Penny (Arjun Gupta) all trying to move forward and having quite the hard time of it.

But we also get what is sure to become a classic Margo line delivery in an equally sure to be classic Eliot/Margo exchange. We see it after we get glimpses of some stakes the magicians will be up against this season.

Margo: We’re gonna endgame this sh*t!

Eliot: (pause) When did you have time to go see Endgame?

The Magicians season airs in January on Syfy.

Based upon Lev Grossman’s best-selling books, The Magicians centers around Brakebills University, a secret institution specializing in magic. There, amidst an unorthodox education of spellcasting, a group of twenty-something friends soon discover that a magical fantasy world they read about as children is all too real— and poses grave danger to humanity.
