The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3

Amazon is returning to Middle-earth. Four months after Season 2 reached its action-packed conclusion, Prime Video confirms that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 is a go. The series is currently in pre-production, with filming to commence this spring at Shepperton Studios, the show’s new production home in the UK.

Additionally, the series has announced three directors who’ve joined the highly anticipated third season, two of whom are returning. Each director will oversee multiple episodes for Season 3. Charlotte Brändström was at the helm for seven episodes across Seasons 1 and 2, including fan-favorites “Udûn” and “Doomed to Die.” Brändström was also co-executive producer for Season 2.

Sanaa Hamri directed three episodes in Season 2 — “Eldest,” “Halls of Stone” and “Where Is He?” She, too, will return for Season 3. Hamri also directed four episodes of Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time Season 2 and one episode of Gen V Season 1.

Series newcomer Stefan Schwartz has been at the helm for a handful of Prime Video series, including last year’s short-lived My Lady Jane and The Boys Season 1 and 2. His other directorial credits include The AmericansFear the Walking Dead and Black Sails

What’s to Come

Vernon Sanders, Head of Television at Amazon MGM Studios, had this to say about Season 3:

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power continues to captivate audiences worldwide, and we’re thrilled that a third season is underway. The creative team has an extraordinary vision of what’s to come with stories that have left us enchanted and enthralled. We look forward to continuing this epic journey for our global customers, delving even deeper into the legendary tales that shaped Middle-earth.”

Here’s a logline for Season 3 per The Hollywood Reporter:

“Jumping forward several years from the events of Season 2, Season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last.”

Season 2 is an improvement, in my opinion, and it ends on quite a cliffhanger. Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) leaps off a cliff to prevent Sauron (Charlie Vickers) from stealing Nenya. Sauron kills Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) and persuades the Orcs to slaughter Adar (Sam Hazeldine). He also convinces them to raze Eregion to the ground. The Elves rally to take the fight to Sauron, whose Orcs are wreaking havoc in Middle-earth. Bring on Season 3, I say.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Prime Video. Season 3 will presumably hit the streamer in 2026.
