The cast of Rob Marshall‘s adaptation of Disney‘s The Little Mermaid grows more and more fascinating by the day. According to THR, the latest to dive under the sea is singer/actor Harry Styles of One Direction fame.
According to the report, Styles in currently in talks to join the cast as the dreamy Prince Eric. The human prince catches Ariel’s eye, prompting the mermaid to try to become human. Should Styles be cast, he joins Halle Bailey as Ariel. Also currently in talks to join the cast are Melissa McCarthy as Ursula the sea witch, Awkwafina as Scuttle the seagull and Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Ariel’s best friend.
If they’re able to get Harry Styles on board, that means the production is going to lean heavily into being a musical. Which is not entirely a bad thing! It only makes me slightly nervous that Disney is working on yet another shot for shot remake of the original animated film. There is, however, some hope that it’s not. Prince Eric didn’t end up having any songs in the original film. So there’s potential for brand new songs and maybe a different take on the story? Not to mention we’re still waiting for the casting of King Triton! We’re going to have to watch this unfold.
What do you think of the casting? Are you looking forward to it? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more Disney fun. The Little Mermaid live action remake currently does not have a release date.
