If you didn’t get your morning cry in today, Square Enix and Deck Nine Games are here to give it to you. We got our first look at the next chapter of their beloved franchise during the Square Enix Presents live stream. Sticking true to its previous games, Life is Strange: True Colors delivers a protagonist with supernatural abilities, a breathtaking world to explore and a thrilling mystery. And if that isn’t enough to excite you, this will be the first game within the franchise to drop the episodic style and release all at the same time. No more crazy cliffhangers and months of waiting to find out what happens next!

Life is Strange: True Colors follows Alex Chen (portrayed through full performance capture tech by Erika Mori) as she moves to Haven Springs to be near her brother. The trailer introduces us to their distant relationship and the chance at rebuilding what was lost to them over the years before ripping the rug out from under us. The real story begins after Gabe’s mysterious death. Alex, who has been suppressing her ‘curse’ for years, must now embrace this gift to uncover the truth.

Alex’s power allows her to see, experience, absorb, and manipulate others’ strong emotions around her. The trailer shows us this as colorful auras that emit from other members of the Haven Springs community. The concept of emotions shown as colors isn’t new, but the way Deck Nine Games visualizes it in Life is Strange: True Colors is simply beautiful. It will be interesting to see how we will interact and learn from these different emotions we come across. What other special abilities will Alex have once she has tapped into someone else?

This franchise is no stranger to building stories that move our hearts. Over the years, we have experienced the love between friends and family, coming to terms with saying goodbye and exploring just how far we are willing to go to protect those around us. We are put into difficult situations where no outcome is the best. Now we get the chance to experience human empathy through Alex’s powers and the strength of the human connection. We will also get to experience Alex’s struggle to find a place to call home and coming to terms with who we are.

Life is Strange: True Colors looks simply amazing. I am, without a doubt, beyond excited to experience this story for myself. The newly updated graphics blend so well with the use of color and Alex’s powers. The trailer even dives into the mystery and explores the idea of close-knit towns looking to protect their own, even if it means ignoring something like murder. It honestly couldn’t come soon enough.
