“Spark of Rebellion” opens as Archibald Desnay (Dominic Monaghan) prepares his fellow fighters for the next step in their rebellion. Bryn (Stacey Raymond) arrives soon after with news of what the Briarwoods have been up to. The meeting is cut short when one of the giants swoops in and goes Attack on Titan all over them. Just when Archibald thinks they can get out, Stonefell (Darin De Paul) arrives with members of the guard and takes them all in.
Dance moment because I have a feeling this episode is going to crush my heart.
Elsewhere in Whitestone, the members of Vox Machina are still staring up at the Suntree in horror. Keyleth (Marisha Ray) wants to pull the people down, but Percy (Taliesin Jaffe) knows that this is a message and that the Suntree is being watched. Instead, they head off to find the Keeper he knew when he was a child. As they make their way through the streets, a giant sends them rushing into an alley where one of the townspeople recognizes Percy’s crest. He knows that they need to find Keeper Yennen (Gina Torres).
And we don’t have to wait long. Across town, Keeper Yennen is speaking to the people. She knows they are suffering but to have faith that things will get better and not to resort to violence. It seems to keep her out of the hurtful eyes of the guard and give peace to those listening. Afterward, Percy and the others approach her and the ideas of rebellion and Percy leading the people of Whitestone come up. He is more about the revenge part, but Keeper Yennen sees it as they are both fighting against a common enemy.

They head off to a tavern where they can discuss more about the rebellion outside of prying ears and eyes. It seems Keeper Yennen might not be all about peace when it comes to putting an end to Lord and Lady Briarwood. Scanlan (Sam Riegel) isn’t impressed with the tavern, while Grog (Travis Willingham) finds a whole new reason to fight after learning that because of the Briarwoods, the town is lacking the best thing in the world – ale.
Keeper Yennen opens up to everyone that she is worried that the resistance will die after losing Archibald, who also happens to be a childhood friend of Percy’s. As he explains what he was like as a child to the group, Keyleth makes her way towards the roots of the Suntree, but before she can chat with it, Grog pulls her into an embrace as he gets excited about saving ale. With Vex (Laura Bailey) and Vax (Liam O’Brien) in as well, it looks like we are going to have a rebellion after all! Someone get Scanlan a beret stat!
“Spark of Rebellion” jumps to Pike (Ashley Johnson), who tries to commune with the Everlight but is struggling. Fire and whatnot. Pike thinks it’s all Lady Briarwood’s fault. However, the head cleric (Anjali Bhimani) tells Pike that she is actually blocking the connection and they need to find out why.
Back in Whitestone, Stonefell is trying to get some information on where to find more members of the rebellion and Vox Machina out of Archibald, but the poor guy doesn’t even know who they are. When his beatings don’t work, Duke Vedrime (Rory McCann) arrives to dish out his own. Nothing like the Hound ripping off your ear.

Back at the tavern, the group put together a few ideas that include Keyleth getting help from the animals, Scanlan using a bunch of potions to be a one-person army and Grog rushing in and killing everyone. Great plans, guys. Unless you ask Vax, he thinks you guys should be disappointed in yourself. The final plan is to split into two groups, with one heading in the front and the other in the back. But to make it as easy as possible, they need to know precisely where he is at. And Percy has what they need.
Back in the dungeons, Vedmire continues his interrogation but gets nothing out of him before Archibald passes out. He heads off, leaving Stonefell in the dungeons while Percy and the others watch in from the roof of the tavern with Bad News! Now that they know where to hit, it’s time to get this show on the road! The front door team is Vex, Keyleth and Grog, while the back door team is Vax, Percy and Scanlan. The front door team gets in with a simple blow of the kiss while the back door team faces the worst villain in Critical Role – locked doors.
While exploring the dungeon, Keyelth spots Bryn and other rebellion members. Vex isn’t sure about letting them out right away but decides what the hell. Get out early for bad behavior. Things only get worse out back as the guys struggle to get the door open and Percy heads for a window. Back inside, things get a bit heated as a fight breaks out between the Pale Guard and the front door team/rebellion.

“Spark of Rebellion” returns to the backdoor, which still isn’t open. Scanlan tries to use a bit of magic which knocks poor Percy out of the window and onto the other two below. Percy gets up, leaving the other two to get doused in piss when a guard opens the door and dumps it out. Poor guys. Now with the group all back together, the second half of the mission can begin.
Upstairs, Percy finds Archibald and manages to break him out thanks to Vax’s exceptional lock picking. Just as they are about to make their way out, Stonefell and some guards show up with Scanlan in tow. But this bard has a few tricks up his sleeve and manages to get out of quite the pickle. A fight breaks out and it’s a free for all as Percy and the rest of Vox Machina try and get Archibald out of there. For Whitestone!
It’s intense action and gore and we even get to see Keyleth lose her cool and transform into Minxy! Grog, of course, finds the ale and drink fights his way through the dungeon. When all the exits seem to be blocked off, Archibald decides to use himself as a diversion to help get everyone out. While running about, Percy spots Stonefell and separates himself from the group. The mask and smoke are back! A few shots from Percy’s pepperbox and Stonefell is down but not before Percy reveals it was him.
“Spark of Rebellion” comes to an end as Percy learns that he isn’t the last living De Rolo. His sister Cassandra (Esmé Creed-Miles) is still alive. Vox Machina and the living members of the rebellion make it out of the dungeons alive. But, before the credits roll, we learn that Cassandra may still be alive, but it seems like she is on the side of the Briarwoods.

And just like that, this week’s drop of The Legend of Vox Machina comes to an end. What a drastic change from the happy dragon-slaying days of last week! We knew going into these series that we were getting the Briarwood arc. We knew we would be getting some dark, horror, emotionally damaging backstories and that is just the tip of the iceberg. But seeing it animated just hits different. Not better and not worse. Just different. I still love how they have been able to balance comedy with darker themes to bring us a well-rounded series.
Well, friends, we just have to wait another week until we get our The Legend of Vox Machina fix. Episodes seven, eight and nine hit Amazon Prime Video on February 11, 2022. What did you think of this week’s episodes? Let us know in the comments below and on social media!
