“Those Who Walk Away” opens with a flashback to young Vex and Vax. Vax saves Vex from some shady people, and on their way out, Vex picks up her new friend – Trinket. In the present day, Vox Machina are trying everything in their power to bring Vex back to life. Kashaw (voiced by Will Friedle) and Zahra (voiced by Mary Elizbeth McGlynn) arrive back at the tomb and try and aid them.

But, it seems that the Matron of Ravens is keeping Kashaw’s holy magic from working. However, the only one who can see her is Vax, who makes a deal. His life for Vex’s. It seems she has accepted his agreement since Vex awakes without knowing what happened, and Vax is now sporting her Vestige. It’s good that Grog (voiced by Travis Willingham) is here to fill her in. It seems that Vex is taking this death far better than anyone expected.

The team decides it’s time to head out of the Sunken Temple, but Zahra and Kashaw have one last trick up their sleeve. While they plan their next move, Vax gets a vision of a battle from the Calamity full of the Gods and a vision of where they can find the Sphinx. He always comes face-to-face with Purvan, the Matron’s original Champion.

Back in the Temple, Zahra unleashes a Beholder creature ready for a fight. But this enemy has a rather pesky ability that petrifies his enemies. Grog falls first, of course. While Keyleth (voiced by Marisha Ray), Pike (voiced by Ashley Johnson), Percy (voiced by Taliesin Jaffe), Scanlan (voiced by Sam Riegel) and Vex deal with the monster, Vax is drawn into another vision. Within, he is forced to face off against Purvan.

When Keyleth becomes petrified, Kashaw can’t continue to stand by and joins that fray. Zahra rushes into, not to help Vox Machina but more to protect Kashaw. However, she cannot get the creature back into the locket, and the fight continues. Slowly, the rest of the team gets turned to stone, leaving Vex to protect Vax. In Vax’s vision, he finally overcomes Purvaan with some wisdom from young Vex and officially becomes the new Champion. With his new powers, he quickly takes out the monster and saves everyone.

Vex and the others finally confront Zahara and Kashaw over everything. Their apology is cut short as the Sunken Temple crumbles, sending them rushing back to shore. Later on, Percy tries to apologize to Vax over what happened with Vex, which ends with a punch to the face and an angry Vax. Back at the fire, Kashaw and Zahara say their goodbyes and Zahara passes on her necklace, allowing Vex to keep Trinket safe when he isn’t needed.

“Those Who Walk Away” comes to a close as Vax gets one more vision of the Matron that heavily implies that his life is tied to her directly. And the creepy corpse he turns around to doesn’t bode well. He talks to Vex about what happened and his pact, and while she thinks everything will be fine, he knows everything has changed. In the final moments, we watch as Ripley (voiced by Kelly Hu) keeps an eye on them and heads toward Westruun.

What an episode. This small arc within the Chroma Conclave was one of our defining moments while watching Critical Role. For many Critters, it was the first time we realized that players’ characters could die. And watching Matthew Mercer adjust the rules to work with their story and world was amazing. This also sets up several pivotal plot points in the future. How will Vex react to her death experience? What will happen with Vax and the Matron of Ravens? How will Vex’s death affect the other members of Vox Machina?

We’ve still got two more episodes to go this week so let’s dive into episode five!
