Fan-made tributes have been the driving force behind keeping fandoms alive. It’s how fans can come together and enjoy retrospectives, share theories and do deep dives into their favorite characters, movies or tv series.
Heroes Fan Productions, a YouTube channel dedicated to producing fandom pieces about pop culture, has just released a new video about Kylo Ren/Ben Solo (Adam Driver). It’s an emotional journey that takes us from the beginning of Episode IV: A New Hope to the end of Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.
Drawing footage from most of the Star Wars movies, Star Wars Rebels, The Clones Wars and Star Wars: Galaxy of Adventures, The Last Skywalker takes us through the rise and fall of Kylo Ren and the Skywalker line.
Through all the different clips used, it is fascinating to see the sheer amount of parallels in story, dialogue and the personal journeys of all members of the Skywalker line and members of the Jedi Order. From the idea of self-sacrifice (Kanan, Han, Ben), to the corruption of the dark side (Anakin, Ben) and to final redemption (Anakin, Ben). Of course, there are also love story parallels (Anakin and Padme, Han and Leia, Ben and Rey) as well as the concepts of belonging and family.
In all, this 27-minute video captures what makes Star Wars great. It’s the stories and themes that we can all connect with. It’s the idea that people can be saved, loved and belong. The notion that we can find our family through shared loss and triumph and that it is ultimately the journey that makes us who we are.
