Highlights

  • HBO has renewed critically acclaimed drama The Last of Us for Season 3 ahead of its Season 2 premiere.
  • It’s unclear whether the third season will be the show’s last.
  • Season 2 debuts this month on Max.

Ahead of its Season 2 release, The Last of Us has been renewed for a third season. However, it remains to be seen whether or not The Last of Us Season 3 will be the show’s final season. The show is based on the video game of the same name. It stars Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie.

The Last of Us Season 3

The Last of Us premiered on January 15, 2023, swiftly converting many audience members into full-fledged fans. It takes place in a world in which human civilization has been overtaken by a Cordyceps infection. This leaves its victims transformed into zombie-like creatures. However, Ellie is unique among the survivors, thanks to her immunity to the infection.

Joel is tasked with smuggling Ellie out of a quarantine zone and across the United States. As the first season progresses, he develops a sense of loyalty towards Ellie that was absent at the show’s outset. Thanks to the show’s cross-country narrative, many guest stars appear. In the show’s upcoming second season, these will include Danny Ramirez as Manny, Catherine O’Hara as Gail and Joe Pantoliano as Eugene. Also, Jeffrey Wright will reprise the role of Isaac Dixon, whom he originally portrayed in the game.

It remains to be seen whether or not The Last of Us Season 2 will depart from the source material. As those who have played the game are aware, a status quo-shifting twist occurs early on The Last of Us Part II. If this twist takes place in the show, it could greatly affect the content of The Last of Us Season 3. However, it’s worth noting that the first season did not shy away from alterations to the narrative when adapting it from the source material.
