The Last of Us Part II Remastered Trailer Breakdown

When The Last of Us Part II Remastered is released on Jan. 19, players will be welcomed with a brutal, roguelike survival game mode. Titled No Return, the mode was announced in a trailer on YouTube on Dec. 4, and features many aspects of the main story. Pre-orders for the game start Dec. 5, listed as $49.99 in the PlayStation store.

In typical violent fashion for The Last of Us franchise, the game will throw players into familiar places, but with unfamiliar scenarios with randomized modifiers. Like in all the games, the players will be taking on zombies and will survive as long as they can. Within this rogue mode, however, being bit does not merely mean resetting at the last checkpoint.

It’s a live-or-die style single player game: when players lose, they lose all their weapons and items. Basically, players will have to get as far as they can while acquiring upgrades, and then when they restart, they will have those upgrades from the beginning — but only the upgrades.

With the upgrades and practice, players should get stronger and further each try. For reference, No Return seems to have similar traits to the Assassins Creed: Valhalla game mode, Forgotten Saga, in which players progress through in a single run and gain insight into the world each time.

With the few visuals shown in the 95-second video, viewers learn that they will choose to play as one of the characters from the storyline. This includes Ellie, Dina, Jesse, Abby, Lev, Yara, and Manny. From the clip shown, there are three characters that will be unlockable — Tommy, Joel, and Mel. Different skins can be unlocked during progression as well. Each character has special “traits.” Jesse, for example, has 30% more currency.

When a character fails a run, they will be forced to begin again with a fresh set of random scenarios. The trailer says that players will have “random mods,” but they were not clear.

The trailer reveals that the runs will begin in familiar places from the storyline, such as the Hardware Store, State Street, Hospital Basement, Forest, and News Channel. Each location came with a description posted on it, like Holdout, Capture, Assault, and Hunted. It is not clear what these seemingly different game modes are.

With the remastering of the game for the PlayStation 5, it is clear that the graphics will be greater than its predecessor’s visuals. The trailer shows the dark, dystopian world in clarity and detail — for those who felt the game was stunning before, they will be extremely satisfied with this game when it comes out.

The Last of Us is developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The first game in the series was released in 2013, which was remastered for the PlayStation 5 in 2014. This newly remastered version will also bring the game to this console generation and will include three Lost Levels with developer commentary, graphical enhancement, guitar free play, and more.
