Alita: Battle Angel is a rip-roaring sci-fi fest. I don’t think anyone can deny that. And we have further proof with this brand new trailer giving us a better look at the world and story. Just who is Alita and what is there in her past? Based on the manga Battle Angel Alita by Yukito Kishiro, we get a glimpse at where her story will go.
Alita (Rosa Salazar via motion capture) mentions a war that “shook the ground and burned the sky” as we see some of the damage it’s done. Giant piles of scrap are left in heaps. And after the war, men got powerful and others got incredibly weak. Some humans are now cyborgs, some with huge enhancements like swords for hands and whip fingers. Alita is different from them though, as she has a “very human brain”. But not only that, she possesses knowledge over 300 years old. People want her dead and will hunt her down. Because of her knowledge? Is that when the war was? That’s not made clear. But she wants to know about her past and how she came to be. Will she be able to find the answers?

If you’ve read my work, you know I am all about female protagonists. And I love that Robert Rodriguez is directing this, he’s a true visionary and I trust his vision on it. But I do have doubts with James Cameron. He’s the producer and screenplay writer of this film. For me, Avatar was a poorly written film with uninspired dialogue and a pretty unoriginal plot. That film left me sour on him. However, I may give it a chance given Rodriguez on the film. I’m just curious if this will be another uninspiring film outside of visuals. We need great plot to go along with film, not just imagery, although I do concede that the imagery in this trailer is beautiful.

From visionary filmmakers James Cameron (AVATAR) and Robert Rodriguez (SIN CITY), comes ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, an epic adventure of hope and empowerment. When Alita (Rosa Salazar) awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize, she is taken in by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate doctor who realizes that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past. As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious history while her street-smart new friend Hugo (Keean Johnson) offers instead to help trigger her memories. But it is only when the deadly and corrupt forces that run the city come after Alita that she discovers a clue to her past – she has unique fighting abilities that those in power will stop at nothing to control. If she can stay out of their grasp, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family and the world she’s grown to love.
