The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 is on its way to Hulu. A new teaser was released on Sunday during the Super Bowl. The teaser starts as propaganda and ends in a wake-up call from Offred (Elisabeth Moss) herself. There are a lot of juicy clues in this teaser, and some new questions.

“It’s morning again, in America,” says a pleasant male announcer voice. You’d think it was any other commercial for cereal or insurance if not for Elisabeth Moss’ face in the first shot. “America” is the first clue. Not Gilead. America. Hmm. Then we see Luke with a little girl at the beach… which we assume is Hannah but she was the whole reason Offred stayed in Gilead. So, how’d she get out? It doesn’t seem to be a flashback, given Hannah’s apparent age. Is it possible he got her out without June’s knowledge, and she’s just going back in to find that her entire family has escaped and she lost her chance?!? Ugh. Yes. That’s possible.

The propaganda continues with a claim that more women will go to work than ever before, with a shot of a woman in the colonies. Then a claim that dozens of babies will be born this year, against a shot of commanders’ wives carrying away handmaids’ infants and Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) with Holly… who is now gone. Isn’t she? Didn’t the baby get out? We recognize that shot as a flashback, right?

Then the propaganda is interrupted by literal fire. A vengeful Offred is pictured, and Serena Joy is standing in the flames. Is that fire a dream? A metaphor? Or does Offred burn the house down? Does Serena!?! The last time we saw Serena she had been mutilated for her reading uprising and willingly gave Holly to Offred to save her from a similar fate. We are very interested to find out exactly where season 3 finds Serena Joy.

There are other flashes of chaos and the militant order of Gilead. Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) seems to find the baby gone. Something is amiss in the colonies. Offred prays? The final moment is Offred who says, “Wake up America.  Morning’s (mourning’s?) over.” She says America, too. And, we see a familiar sight of handmaid’s lined up in a square. But there are more of them. And, this time they’re all around the reflecting pool on the National Mall, in the shadow of the Washington Monument, altered to appear like a giant cross. Ugh! So creepy. We can’t wait!

Wake up. Season 3 of The Handmaid’s Tale, is coming soon.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 will premiere on Hulu this year.
