If you thought we were done playing with time travel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Doctor Strange, then think again because there’s more — but not in the way you are expecting.

Guardians of the Galaxy was released in 2014. The events of that film took place in that year because we know they happened 26 years after 1988. That’s easy enough, right? The next film in the franchise, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol.2 — opening next week — takes place just a couple months after the first film. That is, Guardians 2 also takes place in 2014.

Keep with us, because this is where it gets a little tricky. The Guardians of the Galaxy will meet with The Avengers in next year’s film, Avengers: Infinity War, but it will be in 2018. This means that the Guardians we see in that film will have seen four years worth of adventures and will be different in some ways.

This was all confirmed by Cinema Blend when they spoke with Kevin Feige last week when he told them that, in general, Marvel movies don’t really say the dates for their films, with Guardians being the biggest exception. Typically, it’s just assumed the film is taking place with the year its released; however, in Guardians we know that’s not the case. And though they could have made Volume 2 to fit into this current year of 2017, as Feige says, “… it was important for the story that James wanted to tell that they’re still relatively fresh in their new group.”

Perhaps even better than that, however, is the fact that the team we see in Vol. 2 will be a bit different, more grown together and more familial by the time we catch back up to them in 2018’s Infinity War. As Feige told Cinema Blend, “[The Guardians] will have evolved slightly, in some recognizable ways. But really they’ll be the Guardians and dealing with the shit storm they have to deal with.”

Basically, if you weren’t already excited for Avengers: Infinity War, you should be even more excited now because we’ll get to catch up on four more years of adventure with the Guardians of the Galaxy!
