This news is nothing to “Huzzah!” about. Deadline reports that Hulu has canceled dark period comedy The Great after three seasons. The streamer debuted 10 new episodes three and a half months ago, making this cancellation sting all the more. According to Deadline, no reason has been given yet for the axing, and Hulu has declined to comment.
Tony McNamara (The Favourite) created, wrote and executive produced The Great, which hones in on Catherine the Great before she gained her famous moniker. The series stars Elle Fanning as Catherine and Nicholas Hoult as Peter, her husband whom she inevitably dethrones by staging a coup d’etat. Fanning and Hoult have electrifying chemistry as a couple who go from trying to kill each other to loving each other so deeply. Hoult, in particular, became a fan favorite for the depth and humor he injected into the mercurial Peter.

Since its premiere three years ago, the show has garnered accolades, including Emmy nominations for Fanning and Hoult. It took the streamer by storm on May 15, 2020, with Season 2 arriving on November 19, 2021 and Season 3 debuting on May 12, 2023.
Besides Fanning and Hoult, the irreverent period series also stars Phoebe Fox, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Bayo Gbadamosi, Belinda Bromilow, Adam Godley, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan and Florence Keith-Roach. Notable guest stars from over the seasons include Jason Isaacs as Peter’s father and Gillian Anderson as Catherine’s mother. Freddie Fox and Grace Molony also recur as Hugo and Agnes, respectively.

Season 3, which boasts the strongest reviews from critics, might not have been as well-received by fans due to a handful of shocking character deaths. However, the back half of the season allows for wonderful character exploration and a beautiful meditation on the grief process. While Season 3 ends on what can be interpreted as a note of finality, there are enough lingering questions to answer in a potential fourth season.
Seasons 1-3 of The Great are now streaming on Hulu.
