The Gifted

A storm is brewing on The Gifted. The Inner Circle has been preparing for a revolution for months. They’ve created chaos by making some very strategic moves all to create a “hoMe” for mutants. And their next move promises to be catastrophic.

The Mutant Underground is finally gathering to make some moves of their own. MU leader Evangeline (Erinn Ruth) is gathering her generals to discuss their first move. John Proudstar (Blair Redford) is ready. As for the rest of the gang…not so much. Clarice (Jamie Chung) has voiced her concerns about everything John does. Marcos (Sean Teale) is preoccupied with Lorna/Polaris (Emma Dumont). And the Struckers are concerned about getting Andy (Percy Hynes White) back and Lauren’s (Natalie Alyn Lind) growing powers.

Gather the Troops

Marcos and Lorna witnessed a secret meeting between Reeva Page (Grace Byers) and Benedict Ryan (Peter Gallagher). Marcos tells Lorna that it’s too dangerous for her to return to the Inner Circle, but it will raise suspicions if she doesn’t. He tells her about Evangeline’s call for the Underground to meet. Lorna is glad to hear it, but doesn’t think the Underground is any match for the Inner Circle. They need to find out what Reeva has planned first.

The next day, the team meet with Evangeline. She’s happy to hear the Lorna is on board, but warns the team to protect her. They have to make sure the Inner Circle never learns of her meetings with Marcos. She says they need as many people as they can get and that includes the Morlocks. Clarice scoffs at the thought of the Morlocks joining the war, but Evangeline says Erg (Michael Luwoye) owes her a favor for saving his life.

Caitlin (Amy Acker) and Reed (Stephen Moyer) talk about Benedict Ryan. They feel like they need to find more information about him, the Purifiers, and Inner Circle. Caitlin’s brother, Danny (Jeffrey Nordling) works for Homeland Security. She decides to visit him to ask him to get any information he can. Lauren volunteers to go with her.

Von Strucker Destiny

Lauren has been translating the letter she found in the music box. It was written by Andreas von Strucker (Carsten Norgaard). He says he was on a mission to free his people from bondage, which the reader should continue. As for Fenris, there are two sides always in conflict: the lightness and the darkness. Once both sides know the power of the other and embrace the opposing force, then they will be whole.

Lauren falls asleep and dreams with Andy. She says Andy is going down a dark path, but Andy says she doesn’t know what she’s talking about. Lauren says she knows more than he thinks and she knows more about Fenris. She has been training as well and is more powerful. Andy tells her to prove it. Lauren throws her blades and is able to throw Andy backward so hard that he wakes up with a bloody nose.

The Frost sisters (Skyler Samuel) hear Andy screaming and run to check on him. He tells them about his dreams with Lauren. He says she is getting stronger. Esme says it’s not safe for him or Lauren if they are having dreams in their training room. It’s time for Lauren to join the Inner Circle. Andy isn’t sure he could convince her, but the Frosts say they could help him. They tell him to think about it. After the leave his room, Esme tells her sisters that they have to be careful how they play this one or risk losing Andy. Lauren is becoming dangerous. If she doesn’t join the Inner Circle, she has to die.

John, Clarice, and Marcos retrieve Erg to go to the Underground meeting. Caitlin and Lauren are on their way to Atlanta. That leaves Reed at home alone. He looks at the music box in Lauren room and opens it up. The music brings back a memory of when Reed was younger. He found the music box buried in the wall. His powers activate and Reed throws the box down. He finds the letter with Lauren’s translation.

Reed uses his computer to finish the translation of the letter. Andreas says that he and Andrea von Strucker tried to escape their persecution. The power within the von Strucker family will rise because they were meant to dominate. He says the reader knows this. They shouldn’t fear or hide from their powers, they should embrace their power. They are von Struckers and it’s their destiny.

While Reed reads the letter, he remembers finding the box and listening to the music. His father Otto Strucker finds him with the box and gets angry. He says the box is not for Reed and takes it away. Reed’s powers activate again, so he rushes to his medicine and injects himself.

The Truth

Lauren and Caitlin find Danny at church. He freaks out because he was told that they were dead. Caitlin asks for his help in getting information. Lauren says there’s a terrorist attack coming. Danny is reluctant to help until they tell him that Andy is one of those terrorists.

Erg broods as they drive to the meeting. He says Evangeline gave him no choice about the meeting. Marcos reminds him that she saved his life. Erg doesn’t remember it that way. He says he founded the Mutant Underground with Evangeline. He took care of people in the tunnels while she organized people on the surface. A human ally betrayed them, resulting in several mutants being slaughtered. Evangeline held him back from helping them.

They differed in opinion about how the Underground should operate. He wanted to establish communities, but Evangeline didn’t. So he left and took the Morlocks with him. He says her invitation is a threat. She knows how to get to his community and would expose them if he didn’t show up. John says this fight belongs to them all, but Erg calls it a suicide mission. He’s only there to protect his people.

Lorna has been trying to find out what the new recruits’ mission is. She tried talking to Max (James Carpinello) but he’s being coy about everything. She overhears the Frosts going over the mission with the strike team. They tell the team to only hit the list of targets and nothing else. Lorna stops Max as he head toward the door and asks if he needs back up. He says they will be okay. They are just slaying a dragon. As soon as they leave, Lorna runs to her room to retrieve a hidden phone. She calls Marcos to let them know that Reeva sent the strike team to hit the Underground. John speeds up to try and warn them.

One Step Ahead

Andy finds Lorna, still distraught about the strike team mission. He asks if he should trust the Frosts. He would like to have Lauren with him, but he knows she doesn’t believe in their cause. Lorna says no one can make anyone believe in anything, not even the Frosts.

Lorna walks up on Sage (Hayley Lovitt) watching her computer. She asks if the strike team’s mission went well. Sage says she doesn’t know anything about that and neither should Lorna. Esme interrupts and asks to speak to Lorna. Andy told Esme about Lorna’s advice. Lorna says she only told him the truth. Esme gets upset and reminds Lorna that she cares for her daughter. She wants to build a better world for Dawn. So Lorna should stay out of things that don’t concern her.

John, Marcos, Clarice and Erg arrive at the meeting too late. The Inner Circle strike team has destroyed the building where the meeting was supposed to take place. John listens for any sign of mutant activity but can’t find any. The Underground is gone. Erg says it’s all over, upsetting John further. He says they are all in this fight together.

Clarice tries to calm them down, saying they are all on the same side, but Erg and John disagree. John says the Morlocks are too busy hiding and Erg argues that the real world wants to destroy mutants. Things get heated and words are exchanged, resulting in John punching Erg. Erg throws the energy right back at John, throwing him into a pile of dirt.

Wired

Lauren and Caitlin wait for Danny at a golf course. Lauren tells her mom about her dream. She says she attacked Andy and doesn’t know how to feel about that. Caitlin trusts that when it comes to it, Lauren will do what is right. Danny shows up saying this thing they are involved in is much bigger than all of them. Caitlin tells Danny that she trusts him and that makes him feel guilty. He pulls a wire off of his chest, revealing that he has been compromised.

Danny says he asked a friend for information on Benedict Ryan and Reeva Page. They arrested him within minutes of mentioning Reeva’s name. The Inner Circle have people in Homeland Security, the Attorney General’s office, possibly even Congress. He says Benedict Ryan is the leader of the Purifiers, but he couldn’t get anything on Reeva.

Danny tells Caitlin to run, but it’s too late. Sentinel Services pulls up. Lauren is able to hold them off long enough for Caitlin to get in the car. She starts to like the damage that she is causing. Caitlin yells for Lauren to get in the car. Lauren puts up a shield so they can get away.

Andy can tell something is wrong with Lauren. His heart is racing and he’s agitated and sweating. The Frosts tell him that his mom and sister were almost caught by Sentinel Services, but they got away. Esme uses this information as leverage, telling Andy that his family is in danger. They’ve also learned that there is something wrong with Reed’s powers. They have the resources to help him. It’s time to reach out to Lauren so Andy can save them all.

What Now?

John recovers from the hit from Erg. Clarice tells him that Erg’s power is that he redirects the force attacks against him. John doesn’t like Erg’s excuses, but Clarice defends him saying Erg is only trying to protect his people.

Throughout the episode, we’ve seen flashbacks of Clarice as a child. She and her foster sister Lilly plan their escape from an abusive home. Lilly decides to return to help the younger children in the house. Their foster dad takes out his anger on Lilly, knocking her down and breaking her neck. Lilly died.

Clarice tells John this story because she’s afraid he’s doing the same thing. Getting into a battle that he can’t win. She says it’s selfish, but John says he can’t walk away. Clarice knows that, but she can’t watch him die. So she decides to leave with Erg.

Marcos tells Lorna about Evangeline. Lorna is upset and feels like she’s trapped. She tells Marcos that Reeva and the Frosts want Lauren.

Erg welcomes Clarice/Blink to the Morlocks. She says she made a brave decision and his people are now safer because of it.

Lauren and Caitlin return home. They tell Reed about their trip, but leave out the part about the gunfire from Sentinel Services. Caitlin notices that Reed’s medicine is almost gone.

Andy prepares for bed with the Frost sisters standing over him, waiting to connect with Lauren.

Thoughts

I have a bad feeling about this.  It’s just a feeling and it’s been there all season, but I think we are going to get a major death before the end of the season. Things are already falling apart for the Underground…or what’s left of it. Lorna has already realized her mistake, so now its Andy’s turn. I don’t think anyone with power will leave us…so that just leaves one option. And that death would have a major impact on everyone. Just a thought….
