The Gifted

The more we learn about Polaris’ the more she becomes like her father on The Gifted.  It is known that Lorna Dane (Emma Dumont) is the daughter of Magento even though his name is never mentioned.  Through flashbacks, Lorna and Marcos (Sean Teale) celebrate her pregnancy with talk about how they will not be like their parents.  That leads to talk about Lorna’s real father.  She only knew the stories about the horrible things he did with The Brotherhood.  And she only received one thing from him.  A metal disc that looks like Magneto’s helmet.

That leads to another flashback.  Lorna was raised by her Aunt Dane (Kathryn Erbe). She received the disc on her thirteenth birthday with a note from her father.  She tore up the note, but kept the disc. Lorna grew up angry and hurt that her parents never came back for her.

Aftermath

Last week, their bank heist ended with new girl Rebecca (Anjelica Bette Fellini) killing 37 people by turning them inside out.  She was quite proud of herself too.  After they left the bank, Lorna yells at Rebecca for not just leaving when they told her to.  Rebecca has a different idea of a safe world for mutants that does not include humans.  She thanks Andy (Percy Hynes White) for being kind and jumps out of the car.  Andy wants to go after her, but Lorna says they are better off without Rebecca.

After the news reports about the bank heist, the Purifiers start attacking known mutant facilities. The Inner Circle is in disarray.  Sage (Hayley Lovitt) tries to find Rebecca using the headquarters tech, while Reeva (Grace Byers) and two of the Frosties (Skyler Samuels) go out to find her. Lorna doesn’t feel like the Inner Circle can protect Dawn anymore.  She wants to take the baby some place where she can be safe.  Esme suggests a school for gifted children, but it’s in Switzerland.

Lorna takes Dawn to Marcos instead. She tells him that she is sending Dawn away and he will never see her again.  She’s only there so he can say goodbye to his daughter, that he only met once.  Marcos is very upset.  He thinks he can protect Dawn, but they both know that’s not true.  He says Dawn deserves to grow up with her family.  Lorna knows what it’s like to not know her parents. Dawn would be the same way.  Marcos spends a few moments alone with Dawn before handing her over to Lorna. When they all touch, they create an aurora borealis together.  Lorna takes the baby and leaves an upset Marcos alone to grieve.

Search Party

The Mutant Underground sees the chaos on the news and have to decide if they are going to save mutants or sit by and watch.  Clarice (Jamie Chung) is as pleasant as ever in voicing her opinion.  She doesn’t want to go out on the streets without a plan.  Whereas, John (Blair Redford) just wants to jump in and help where he can.  They decide to track down the Inner Circle to find out what they are up to.

As they look for the Inner Circle, they run into an energy that makes Clarice sick.  John uses his senses to figure out what kind of mutant was there.  It’s Rebecca. She used her powers in that spot.  They look around and find a dead man, who has been bent and twisted funny.  They keep going and eventually run into Rebecca. she uses her powers to flip their directions around, making Clarice sick in the process.

Rebecca tells them to stop following her, but John says they just want information about the Inner Circle.  She tells them she left because they only used her as a tool in their heist.  They want to know what the Inner Circle was after by robbing Creed Financial.  She doesn’t know much, but Rebecca gives them a name, Regimen. She runs away, telling John that he doesn’t know what he’s up against.

They return to their apartment so Clarice can lay down.  John finds out that Regimen is a tech company in DC.  Clarice doesn’t seem very interested in chasing this white rabbit, but John wants to know more.  As for Rebecca, she stops to rest and someone grabs her neck.  It’s Fade (Jeff Daniel Phillips).  He used his invisibility to sneak up and pull a knife on her.  He is taking Rebecca back to Reeva.

Control

The Struckers find Dr. Madeline Risman (Kate Burton) at college in North Carolina. She immediately recognizes Reed (Stephen Moyer). He shows her that his powers have manifested and asks for her help with controlling them.  Dr. Risman doesn’t quite understand how his powers came back, but assumes it has something to do with the stress he lives under.

Luckily, Dr. Risman continued Otto’s research, using it to help mutants whose powers are more like a disability.  She created a devices that works like insulin. The X-gene is still active, but the patients are able to control their powers. The doctor wants to use Lauren’s (Natalie Alyn Lind) blood to help Reed figure out what went wrong with his treatment and how to correct it.

Reed goes through a treatment that is painful, but he immediately feels better afterward.  Dr. Risman tells him that the one treatment won’t last long. He will have to stay in North Carolina to go through enough treatments to suppress his powers for good.  She tells Caitlin (Amy Acker)that if he doesn’t complete the treatment, Reed will die.

A Normal Life

Lauren heads to the lab to meet Dr. Risman’s lab assistant Noah (Ken Kirby).  Noah is also a mutant.  He took the treatments to suppress his powers and has lived a normal life ever since. He takes a liking to Lauren and offers to show her around the school.  Lauren likes the idea of living a normal life, but doesn’t think its in her future.

Noah tells her that the work Dr. Risman is doing will eventually suppress the X-gene for good.  And her blood is going to help in that research.  He also tells her that Dr. Risman’s brother started the Purifiers.  She doesn’t condone what he has done, when she sees a better way.  That better way is to erase the one thing that makes mutants different from others.  Getting rid of the X-gene.   Lauren feels a little funny about what she’s been told.

Later at Dr. Risman’s home, she talks about the von Strucker twins and how they don’t know the magnitude of that kind of power. She mentions that the twin’s connection to each other was so strong that they could share dreams and feel each other’s pain.  Reed and Caitlin don’t tell her about Lauren and Andy’s connection.   But the next day, Noah takes more blood from Lauren.  At the same time, Andy feels the needle in his arm.

Polaris told Esme that she was taking Dawn to the school in Switzerland.  But she took her to her Aunt Dane instead.  While there she tells her aunt that she understands why her father abandoned her.  Because now she has to do the same.  It’s the only way Dawn can be safe.  She asks her aunt to make sure to tell Dawn that she is special and loved.  She hopes to return for her one day.

When Polaris gets back to the Inner Circle headquarters. She takes the disc from her father and manipulates it into a headband.  She puts the headband on and truly becomes Polaris.

Thoughts

Filler episodes are necessary to fill in some of the gaps and to introduce new content in the story. This episode didn’t give any answers, but provided more speculation about what’s to come.

Dr. Risman’s research is going to lead to either a big death, or a major solution for the mutant problem.  Something tells me that Laurens’ blood will bring about a big advancement in Dr. Risman’s research. But she will probably need Andy to complete it.  And then that will weaponize the Purifiers to erase the X-gene for good.  And that will kill one of the major characters.  Just speculation of course.

This could also be the reason that Lauren turns to the dark side.  I can totally see Lauren joining the Inner Circle. She’s starting to see the harm that humans are doing, to both mutant and humans.  She will want to stop it, and the Inner Circle has the resources to do so. And they have Andy.

We need one episode with many revelations for all of these story arcs.  And they need to connect the dots a little faster.  I’m ready for a battle!
