The Gifted has been full of twists and turns for the Mutant Underground.  The biggest twist being that Sentinel Services is using a mutant to deflect other mutant powers.  This can mean only one thing…Sentinel Services is turning the mutants against each other.

To make matters worse, Clarice has to deal with having feelings for John…and Dreamer is the one who put those feelings there.

The Struckers are reunited and have proven themselves to the mutants.  It’s just a matter of time before they have to deal with the bigger issue.  Will Reed and Caitlin be okay with Andy and Lauren’s powers?

Four years ago, John Proudstar (Blair Redford) and other mutant veterans tried to raise money for the victims of the 7/15 incident. The same incident that killed Agent Turner’s daughter.  The non-mutants are resentful of John.  It’s so bad that someone throws a pipe bomb at their table.  John is able to get rid of it, but it leaves him uneasy.

Present Day

Marcos (Sean Teale) tells John that there are rumors of mutants hunting mutants for Sentinel Services.  John is worried. They barely have a hold on the humans. If they have to fight mutants too, they are done for.  Marcos wants to break into the federal building in Baton Rouge to find out what they are doing. John says Sentinel Services changed their game, so they have to as well.

Andy (Percy Haynes White) observes that more people have arrived. Lauren (Natalie Alyn Lind) says its their fault that mutants have had to go into hiding.  Andy leaves to get more water.

A new guy approaches Lauren and tries to flirt with her.  He creates an illusion that everyone is gone.  His name is Wes (Danny Ramirez). Lauren says she needs to get back to work, but she smiles as she walks away.

Caitlin (Amy Acker) examines a new mutant.  He has to be about 13.  The kid tells Caitlin that he uses his powers 2-3 times a day.  He says he only uses them to get food.  Caitlin releases him and sees Polaris (Emma Dumont) with another teen. The teen girl is raising water from a vase in the air. When she lets it go, it breaks the vase.  Polaris tells the girl that she will start training her.   Caitlin asks what they are training for.  Polaris tells her they have to train for combat, because they are being hunted

John asks Clarice (Jamie Chung) for her help to get into the federal building, but something is wrong. Clarice is still mad about Dreamer (Elena Satine) putting memories in her head.  John apologizes, but says they needed her help.  She asks John if he has feelings for her. He answers that it’s complicated.  She tells him that it’s about to get less complicated. Clarice leaves the Mutant Underground.

John meets with Reed (Stephen Moyer) and other mutants. Reed tells them what he knows one of the judges housed in the building. Shatter (Jermaine Rivers) starts to question Reed’s intel, but Marcos tells him it doesn’t matter. They only need to worry about the mutant files. Marcos suggests using Clarice to get into the building.  John tells everyone that Clarice left, so they have to figure out another way in. Andy says he can get through the wall. Reed is reluctant to let Andy help. Andy says the kids are in just as much danger if not more.  He says he can get through the wall quicker than anyone else. It’s time that Reed lets Andy fight.

Caitlin expresses her concern to Reed. Reed says it’s a chance for him to reconnect with Andy. They are being transported in a moving van, so Andy will be close to Reed for the entire trip.  Caitlin notices that Reed doesn’t have his wedding ring. He says Sentinel Services took it when he went to jail.  They say they will talk later and Reed leaves.

Lauren watches them go. Wes tries to talk to her again, but Lauren isn’t in the mood to talk.

Coby Bell as Agent Jace Turner in The Gifted, fox.com

Agent Jace Turner (Coby Bell) returns to work. His partner reminds him that he’s on a mandatory leave of absence, but Jace doesn’t care. He goes to his office and calls Dr. Roderick Campbell (Garret Dillahunt).

Reed, Andy and Marcos are on their way to Baton Rouge. Reed tries to talk to Andy about being bullied.  He says he talked to the school principal about it.  Andy says he knows. Reed is the reason the bullies went after him at the gym.  Reed wishes Andy would have talked to him. They are interrupted by a cop siren. The cop pulls over the truck and wants to see what is in the back.  Marcos uses his power to absorb the light in the front of the cargo hold.  The driver opens the doors and the cops shines a light into the truck.  He can’t see anything, gets another call, and lets the truck go.

John is moving stones around when Dreamer approaches him.  She asks about Clarice. John says it didn’t go well which fits with everything else going on.  Dreamer knows he’s talking about Pulse. She says it’s not John’s fault that he was captured.  John feels guilty for leaving Pulse behind and says the X-Men made a mistake by choosing him. He says he’s not doing enough and now they have more mutants to protect. Dreamer assures him that he was the right choice because they are expecting a war. John says they may not win.

The truck pulls over at a rest stop.  Reed and Andy talk about his powers.  Andy says it feels good when he rips stuff apart.  Reed is concerned that Andy could hurt someone.  Andy gets upset because Reed is basically telling him not to use his powers. Andy says he just wants Reed to be proud of him. Reed tells Andy to use good judgment.  Marcos interrupts them.  Andy is upset by the conversation and goes to find food.

At HQ, Caitlin is looking for books so Lauren and Andy can continue their studies.  Shatter gives her box.  She asks where he got them. Shatter explains that Sentinel Services takes families when they kids get out of school.

Polaris is training some of the kids to control their powers. She throws tools at them to see what they can do.  Wes uses his power to make Polaris see a bunch of flowers. Polaris tells them this is not a joke. They have to depend on each other to survive.  She tells Lauren to step up and Caitlin stops her.  Polaris says they have powers and need to learn how to use them.  Caitlin doesn’t want Lauren to learn from Polaris and makes her leave.

In the truck Marcos encourages Reed to continue to talk to Andy. He says it will be good for Andy to have someone to talk to.  Marcos and Reed have a heart to heart about being a father.  Marcos says there’s nothing his kids could do that would make him love them less. Andy overhears them.

Dr. Campbell visits Agent Turner and gets him reinstated.  Dr. Campbell wants the files on the STrucker children. Turner says he will comply and send the files over.

Marcos, Reed and Andy get to the federal building.  It’s more guarded than they thought.  They had to change their entry point. Marcos calls Polaris to update them on their progress.

Caitlin tells Polaris that the kids need to have a future after the fight.  Polaris says they could be fighting for the rest of their lives.  Caitlin says this is not the life she wants for Lauren and Andy.  Polaris says Caitlin’s kids are stronger than anything they have ever seen. Caitlin says they need a sense of normalcy.  Polaris reminds her that they are mutants…this is their normal now.

Natalie Alyn Lind as Lauren Strucker and Danny Ramirez as Wes in The Gifted, fox.com

Lauren and Wes talk about wanting a normal life.  Lauren says she had plans. She’s beginning to realize that those plans will never happen. Wes can create illusions.  He creates the city of  Florence for Lauren.  Lauren says it’s actually Rome. They sit and stare at each other until Caitlin calls for Lauren. Lauren smiles as she walks away.

Marcos, Reed, and Andy go to a parking garage next to the federal building.  Andy breaks through the wall to get in.  It’s the first time Reed has seen Andy’s powers.  Andy starts to run into the building , but Reed stops him.  He tells him to go back to the truck.  Marcos and Reed go in and break into an judge’s chambers.  Marcos is trying to break into a computer to get the hard drives.  Sentinel Services shows up just as he gets the drives.  They start to leave and Marcos destroys any evidence of them being there.

John tells Shatter and Sage (Hayley Lovitt) that more mutants are coming. One of their other headquarters was raided and only half of the people were able to escape.  They are over capacity, but they need to make room.  Dreamer comes in and asks about the mission. John says Marcos got what he went for.  She says they didn’t need Clarice after all.   John doesn’t feel right about what they did to Clarice.  Dreamer says no matter when they told her, she would have left.  She tells him it’s okay and he should feel bad about Pulse.  Dreamer kisses him. They are interrupted by a phone call from Marcos.

They are on the way back, but a cop is following them.  Marcos thinks something is up. Reed tells John to check to see if are any directives to avoid the highway they are on.  There is a road block waiting for them.

Blair Redford as John Proudstar in The Gifted, fox.com

John fills in Polaris and Caitlin about the road block.  They have to figure a way to get them out of there. Lauren says Wes can help. He make make a mirage so they can trick the police, but she wants to go too.  If anything goes wrong, Polaris will need her.  Caitlin says okay.

Polaris, Lauren and Wes go to the roadblock and wait.  Polaris is on the phone with Marcos and tells them to keep going.  She will take care of everything else.  Polaris tells Lauren to create ramp for the truck. Then Wes will create an illusion to steer the police away.

Andy freaks out, he says he can stop them.  His anger starts to shake the truck  Reed calms him down. He says Andy’s power is not the solution and it’s important that they work as a team.

Sentinel Services orders the truck to stop. Sentinel Services starts shooting at the truck.  Polaris deflects the bullets being shot at the truck.  Lauren creates a ramp to help the truck go over the barrier. Once they are over the barrier, Wes creates the illusion of two trucks, one turning right, the other turning left.  Lauren asks what happens if they follow the right truck. Wes asks, what truck? The real truck continued to go straight, away from the police.

Agent Turner briefs his team on the attack on the federal building.  He says they took vital, classified information.  He orders surveillance on cell phones in the area. One of the other agents says they need a court order. Turner yells at him telling him to do what he orders.

Caitlin and Reed have some down time.  Caitlin found a ring to replace Reed’s wedding ring.  He’s ready to sit and talk, but she tells him to talk to Andy instead. Reed tells Andy that he is proud of him.  He wants Andy to talk to him.  No matter what he’s thinking.  Andy says he’s thinking that Reed should be the shoe in the Monopoly game.  He’s always the shoe.

Marcos and Polaris are sleeping when he gets a call from Carmen. She needs his services.  If he doesn’t help, she will call sentinel services.

Thoughts…

Lots of action…I’m really liking that there is still a good balance of action and character development.  However, we are getting to the point where the mutants are going to suffer a major setback…perhaps even a loss.  And Reed and Caitlin are getting really annoying trying to “protect” Lauren and Andy.  I get it. They are parents, but they don’t understand what their kids can do. Polaris does. The leaders of the MU are pretty much the only people who can help Andy and Lauren.  The parents are going to make matter worse if they don’t loosen the reigns.
