The Mutant Underground was threatened by one of their own when they had trouble controlling Clarice’s powers. The Strucker children helped to keep the network safe, but the portals kept popping up. Caitlin and Marcos made a trip to a hospital to get medicines that could help Clarice. They ran into some trouble of their own. Along the way, Caitlin got the chance to hear Marcos story and might just understand their fight a little better.
Lorna got into a fight with the other inmates, using her power to fight back. She was put in solitary, probably for her own safety.
Reed made a deal with Agent Turner to give up the Mutant Underground. Ugh!
So here we are…

Flashback

Marcos (Sean Teale) told Caitlin that Lorna (Emma Dumont) found him and gave him a new family. The episode starts with Lorna showing Marcos around their mutant headquarters. Marcos is pretty cynical about the world and anything that resembles safety. He feels bad about his powers. Lorna tries to cheer him up by showing him her powers. The two have a special moment when their powers merge, creating a mini Aurora Borealis effect. Marcos kisses Lorna.
Back to the present
Lorna is visited by Agent Turner (Coby Bell). He says he is going to take down her friends, starting with Marcos. If she cooperates, he will allow visitations with their child. He says is she doesn’t cooperate, she will go to a worse place where she will give him the information he wants.
At Mutant HQ
Marcos and John (Blair Redford) continue to argue about going after Lorna. Marcos wants to use Clarice’s (Jamie Chung) ability to break Lorna out. John is concerned after what happened when Clarice overexerted herself. Sonia (Elena Satine) wants them to try. Lorna is her friend and she wants to help her, but Caitlin (Amy Acker) says Clarice is not strong enough to handle a jailbreak. Marcos tells John to train Clarice to build up her strength and have better control of her abilities. John reluctantly says okay.
Caitlin says they should try to go through the proper channels to get Lorna out. She says she has connections, but everyone knows the ‘proper channels’ are no good to mutants. John says they can’t risk the exposure. She can’t have any contact with the outside world while she is there. It’s too dangerous.
The Strucker twins are playing Monopoly. Lauren (Natalie Alyn Lind) gets upset when Andy (Percy Haynes White) picks to be the shoe. She says their dad is always the shoe. Percy picks another piece. Caitlin is shaken by their conversation.
John talks to Clarice about training. She says she can’t help them, but she wants to because she owes Lorna. She says something changed when she got sick and her powers are broken. John says abilities don’t get broken. Most abilities emerge out of strong emotion: fear, pain, etc. What she needs to tap into something positive.
He leaves Clarice and is stopped by Sonia. She asks how things are going with Clarice. John says it will take time. Sonia offers to help with her own abilities. (Sonia, aka Dreamer can plant memories into others.) John says no. Things can go bad…they have before.

Caitlin wakes up Andy and Lauren in the middle of the night. She tells them she is going to see her brother, Danny. They won’t let her go on her own. Caitlin needs protection. They lost their dad, they won’t lose her too. The Struckers sneak out of HQ.
Reed (Stephen Moyer) tells Turner about his meeting with Marcos at the mutant bar. Their plan is to say Reed escaped from Sentinel Services, go to the bar and ask them to take him to Marcos. Sentinel Services will follow and take down the Mutant Underground. Reed asks what will happen to all of the mutants. Turner calls the Mutant Underground a terrorist organization and says they will be dealt with accordingly. Reed is bothered by his part in taking down the mutants.
John and Clarice begin their training. Clarice is really cynical about everything. John tells her to focus on what she cares about most. He tells her to picture what she loves the most and go to it. Clarice starts up her abilities but it dwindles. She says she should be trying because she might destroy something. John says she is focusing on her fear. He stops when he senses something else.
John sees footprints leading away from HQ. He can see and hear the Struckers leaving in the middle of the night. He goes back in to tell Marcos that the Strucker family are gone. John thinks she is going to see one of her contacts. She still believes the system will work. John says they have to find them. Marcos says they don’t have time. If the Struckers get caught, then they get caught. It’s a safety precaution for them all.

The Struckers are trying to figure out a way to get to Caitlin’s brother. They have no money and all of their bank accounts are frozen. Andy wants to rob a bank, but Caitlin won’t let him break the law. Lauren says they can’t break the law if the want a chance at a normal life. Andy says they will never have a normal life. He destroys a couple of meters and that gives them a little bit of money.
Clarice practices using her powers when Sonia sits down with her. Sonia tells her that Lorna is counting on her, putting more pressure on Clarice. Clarice tells Sonia to tell her boyfriend that his plan won’t work. Sonia admits that she and John agreed that they shouldn’t be together. She says John knows what he’s talking about and to keep practicing. Her visit didn’t help Clarice at all.
Caitlin and the kids make it to Danny’s (Jeffrey Nordling) house. Danny’s son, Scott (Cooper Roth) is excited that they are there. He wants to hear all about their adventures. Danny sends the kids off so he can talk to Caitlin. Danny says she shouldn’t have come to his house. She wants him to use his influence to get Reed out of jail. Danny says the high power people he knows are against mutant collaborators. They won’t talk to him anyway because of what’s going on with Caitlin.
Caitlin begs for his help. Danny says he has to think about his family. Caitlin reminds him that they are his family too. He says they can stay the night and have all of the cash in the safe, but in the morning, they have to leave.

Sentinel Services put out a notice that Reed escaped. Agent Turner puts a tracker on Reed. Reed leaves their van and runs to the bar where he first met Marcos. He runs into Tex (Jeff Daniel Phillips), the bartender. Tex fades in and out. He has a gun and tells Reed to leave. The cops are looking for him everywhere. Reed pleads with Tex to help him find his family. He convinces Tex by telling him to shoot him if he can’t help him.
Tex takes him to a secret room in the bar. There is a woman and a little girl in the room. The plan is for Tex to take them to a drop off point. There they will be picked up by someone from HQ.
Reed sits with the mother, Sheila (Erin Way) and daughter, Dominique (Scarlett Blum). He’s visibly hurt from the Sentinel Services gunshot. Sheila has the ability to take away pain. She can’t heal people though. She touches Reed where he was shot and takes his pain.
Scott asks Andy a lot of questions about his abilities while playing video games. Scott asks Andy to destroy one of his trophies. Lauren gasps at something she finds on social media. It’s a picture of two kids who vandalized the Strucker house. Andy knows one of the kids and gets angry. He takes out his anger on Scott’s trophy.
Reed and the others get into a van to go meet their HQ contact. Turner calls for back up to follow the van. Reed sees the Sentinel Services vehicle following them. Dominique assures Reed that they will be safe now. Reed tells Tex to stop the van. He tells them about the tracker. Tex says if they stop, they are dead. So Reed jumps out of the van. Sentinel Services stops to get Reed. Reed says the deal is off.

Lorna looks around her cell and sees a lot of metal. She tries to use her power to break down the door. The collar shocks her, but she keeps trying. Her nose starts bleeding and she is totally worn out. She is able to crawl out of her cell, but passes out. A guard finds her on the floor.
John wakes up Caitlin the next morning. She is freaked out because John and Marcos broke into the house. Danny gets up and finds them fighting in his living room. They hear a group of men outside. The men call for Danny to come outside and talk. He’s confused about who knew that Caitlin and the kids were there. Scott says he texted a picture of the destroyed trophy to one of his friends. That’s how the men found out.
Marcos and John try to figure a way out, but they are surrounded. Andy says they can take them. John says they can’t do anything without anyone dying. Andy says it’s time that people understand what they can do. (Sounds a lot like Magneto)
Danny goes outside and the men specifically ask for Caitlin and her kids. They say they are trying to keep everyone safe. Danny says they are doing it for the bounty. The men start arguing, hit Danny and move toward the front door.
Andy gets angry and destroys the door, knocking all of the men back. Andy yells at them to leave his family alone. One of the men picks up his gun and points it at Andy. John grabs Andy and Marcos steps forward. He uses his solar power to heat up the gun, causing the guy to drop it.
The mutants make their way to the car. Caitlin stops to check on Danny and he tells her to go. They get away, but the group of men follow them. John calls HQ and tells Sonia about their trouble. He asks her to find a way to get them back.

Sonia runs to Clarice and asks her to open a portal big enough to get a truck through. Clarice says she can’t do it. Sonia grabs her and says she can do it if she has someone to care about. Sonia blows pink smoke at Clarice that gives her a false memory of Clarice and John kissing. Clarice comes to and rushes to help everyone.
The neighborhood watch crew start shooting at John’s truck. Caitlin sees Sonia standing next to an open portal. They speed up and go through. Sonia runs through and Clarice closes the portal.
Everyone returns to HQ. John meets Clarice and Sonia. Clarice runs to him and hugs him tight. He looks at funny. She’s smiling and way too happy to see him. He tells Clarice to go inside. John asks Sonia what she did. She gave Clarice a memory of them together. She needed something to make her stronger. John gets angry saying Sonia’s actions are dangerous.
Agent Turner signs papers to transfer Reed and Lorna. He gets a call from Dr. Roderick Campbell. Dr. Campbell wants the Strucker children. Turner says he won’t hand them over and hangs up.
Caitlin meets Danny at a secret location. He tells her to go to his cabin. She says she won’t leave Reed. Danny says he made some calls and Reed is alive. He is being transferred to a top secret mutant detention center. Danny also mentions that a woman from the underground will be with him…can you say ‘set-up’?
Danny tells her to face the fact that she’s never going to see Reed again. Caitlin says he’s wrong and she leaves.
Thoughts…
Wow! The show remains fast paced and the character development is strong. I’d like to see more of the other mutant abilities, but…well…money….
I’m really liking how strong of a character Caitlin Strucker is. She’s understanding, very quickly, just how ugly the world is. And she wants to fight for what she believes is right…including the treatment of mutants.
John Proudstar is another strong character that I like. Blair Redford is doing a great job of bringing him to life. His strong, understands who he’s dealing with and knows the right amount of risk to take. Plus! He doesn’t let his emotions cloud his judgement.
I really hope we get to see Lorna free soon. I’d like to see more of her character’s backstory…considering she is the daughter of Magneto.
I really like this show. I’m looking forward to what the rest of the season brings!
