After several successful tests, the construction of a spaceport, and the placement of shares on the stock exchange, Richard Branson’s company was emboldened enough to start sending the first tourists to the border of outer space on board the SpaceShipTwo ship. A ticket for the ship is estimated at $250 thousand, but Virgin already has a queue of 600 customers who have booked a seat in advance.

It is closely followed by Blue Origin, which also claims its piece of the nascent space tourism market. It plans to send clients on space flights lasting several minutes, giving them a short-term feeling of weightlessness. To do this, Blue Origin runs in the New Shepard system, which has passed through 12 successful test launches. However, the company of Jeffrey Bezos claims that they will not send people on flights until they are sure that everything is working as it should. When exactly this will happen, representatives of Blue Origin do not say, but they hope that in 2022.

Presenting the new ship, Musk said that a flight to Earth orbit is possible in six months. This is an optimistic forecast, given that in the fall we saw only a prototype. SpaceX is not only working on spaceships and rockets. The company also plans to provide the world with Internet access with the help of a mega-constellation of Starlink satellites. It has already sent 180 vehicles into orbit. This is a drop in the ocean since in the future the constellation should include 42 thousand satellites.

SpaceX promises to accelerate launches and send 1,500 spacecraft into orbit within a year. It is assumed that in the middle of the year, the first users will be able to evaluate Musk’s space Internet. 

SpaceX is one of Musk’s oldest creations, but he got another one. In the summer, the businessman introduced the company Neuralink, whose goal is to connect the human brain with a computer. Its engineers have developed implants that can read brain signals after implantation in the head and transmit them to a computer. With the help of such technology, it is possible, for example, to help people who have lost their speech, the ability to communicate by typing a text with the power of thought. And in the longer term — to combine human intelligence with artificial intelligence.

During the presentation, Musk said that the know-how has already been tested on animals, and promised to start testing on humans in 2021. Again, this statement may be too optimistic, but we will certainly hear more about the progress of Neuralink in the coming year.

It’s time to wait for news from another company of Musk, Boring Company, which plans to make a revolution in the urban transport system with the help of underground tunnels. Currently, it is digging a track near Las Vegas, and there is a chance that this year it will launch it into operation.

Last year, Einride brought a couple of them to public roads in Sweden and hopes to increase their fleet to two hundred. This is just one example, but major automakers, such as Germany’s Daimler or China’s SAIC, are also engaged in similar developments.

Another promising technology, the development of which will be interesting to watch in 2022, is neuro implants that provide brain-computer communication. After all, not only Musk works in this industry, but also scientists from different countries. For example, last year, a group of American researchers successfully tested a bionic prosthetic arm capable of transmitting tactile sensations to a person deprived of a limb, and a few months later, French scientists returned the ability to walk to a paralyzed patient by developing a special exoskeleton for him. Both devices functioned with the help of the power of thought.

In addition to scientists, startups like Paradromics and Kernel, as well as IT industry giants like Facebook are also working on creating a brain-computer interface. Mark Zuckerberg’s company even joined forces with researchers at the University of California in San Francisco, together with whom it created a system that converts brain signals into speech, and also acquired the company CTRL-Labs, which was engaged in creating a bracelet that allows you to control a computer with the power of thought.
