This week the #WheresRey movement crossed the Rubicon. The absence of Rey in Hasbro’s Star Wars Monopoly caused the largest social media outcry on the lack of Star Wars: The Force Awakens protagonist Rey in merchandise to date. Blog, news and social media posts were screaming ‘enough is enough!’ and spreading the #WheresRey hashtag in every nook and cranny. And guess what, Rey fans? It worked. Congratulations!
Hasbro released a statement to Entertainment Weekly today saying,
We love the passion fans have for Rey, and are happy to announce that we will be making a running change to include her in the Monopoly: Star Wars game available later this year.
Hasbro had previously stated that Rey’s exclusion was an attempt to not give away spoilers for the film but that excuse fell flat since Rey was heavily promoted on posters and in numerous trailers. Whatever the excuse, the fact is that it was a huge mistake on Hasbro and Disney’s part to exclude Rey from merchandise. This move fueled the fires of gender discrimination but the fan outcry seems to have made a difference. I hope it continues.
Note: Special thanks to GGA’s good friend, Legion of Leia’s Jenna Busch, who started the #WheresRey movement back in September. We’ve come a long way, Baby! Let’s keep moving forward.
