It’s the end of an era as The CW announced The Flash season 9 will be it’s last. And the final season will only have 13 episodes. While this is sad news, it is expected. Nine seasons is a long time for a show to run.
Showrunner Eric Wallace expressed his gratitude in a statement released on Monday. “Nine seasons! Nine years of saving Central City while taking audiences on an emotional journey full of heart, humor and spectacle. And now Barry Allen has reached the starting gate for his last race. So many amazing people have given their talents, time and love to bring this wonderful show to life each week. So, as we get ready to honor the show’s incredible legacy with our exciting final chapter, I want to say thank you to our phenomenal cast, writers, producers and crew over the years who helped make The Flash such an unforgettable experience for audiences around the world.”

The Flash first aired when The CW was still The WB. It started as as spinoff of the DC flagship show Arrow and helped pave the way for DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, and Batwoman. All of these heroes came together a few times for major crossover events. The last one was in 2020. The Flash is one of the longest running series on the CW and the last “Arrowverse” series.
The Flash cast members come and go and come back every now and then. Four of the original cast are still a part of the show; Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, and Jesse L. Martin. Martin recently announced the next season would be his last. Gustin and Patton recently signed new contracts for season 9. The series also stars Danielle Nicolet, Kayla Compton, and Brandon McKnight. Former regulars like Tom Cavanagh have appeared sporadically and I expect they will be a part of the final season as well.
