The Flash is coming back strong for season eight with a five part crossover event titled Armageddon. And according to Eric Wallace, The Flash showrunner, this is not your typical Arrowverse crossover. First, let’s talk about where we left off from season seven.
Barry Allen, the Flash (Grant Gustin) faced a multitude of Godspeeds and as always defeated them with a little help from his friends … and his future kids. Nora Allen (Jessica Parker Kennedy) returned as XS at the end of season seven with her kid brother Bartholomew Allen aka Bart aka Impulse (Jordan Fisher). Yeah, both of his kids are speedsters. Iris (Candice Patton) didn’t mind, she had some issues of her own after surviving the Mirrorverse. She was all about supporting speedster family. Let’s not forgot how strong Iris really is though.
Cisco (Carlos Valdes) and Kamilla (Victoria Park) both said farewell to Central City, but you know Cisco can’t stay away forever. Dr. Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh) returned and left with some new powers that allows him to time travel without messing up the timeline. Caitlin and Frost (both played by Danielle Panabaker) are two separate people now. And the team added new members Chester P. Runk (Brandon McKnight) and Allegra Garcia (Kayla Compton). They’re both so awesome!

OK. Season eight. So, who’s coming to help Barry out? Supergirl’s Alex Danvers, aka Sentinel (Chyler Leigh), Jefferson Pierce, aka Black Lightning (Cress Williams), Mia Smoak-Queen, the new Green Arrow (Katherine McNamara), new Batwoman Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie), Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover newcomer Ryan Choi (Osric Chau), and former Legend Ray Palmer, aka The Atom (Brandon Routh). I’m so happy the CW didn’t totally abandon Ryan Choi or Ray Palmer.
Also appearing are The Flash nemesis Eobard Thawne, the Reverse Flash (Tom Cavanagh). This shouldn’t be shocking to those who saw the Flash-Reverse Flash team up last season. That ended in a betrayal on Thawne’s part, as expected. Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough), the villain from Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow will also make an appearance. These two have teamed up previously against the Legends. Now it seems their sights are on Team Flash.

The new baddie in season eight is a psychic alien known as Despero (Tony Curran). If you’ve seen the trailers, you know Despero’s been looking for Flash, but we don’t know why … yet. Considering the line up of superheroes, it has to be a really big deal if the Flash and Frost can’t handle Despero.
So who is Despero? Despero was created by Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky in 1960. He was a recurring villain of the Justice League of American in the 60s through the 90s in the comics. He is a hulking three-eyed purple alien who boasts immense psychic powers and super-strength, among other things. In The Flash series, Despero comes from the planet Kalanor on a deadly mission that threatens Earth. Wallace chose Despero because of his longevity as a villain in the comics.
Wallace told Entertainment Weekly, “When Despero shows up on Earth, you can kind of understand why he’s here [and] see it from his point of view. That was kind of important to get across, but then to not be afraid of the bigger side because, as fans of the comics know, Despero has a lot of powers. This isn’t a guy who just stands there and talks for five episodes. You’ll see him using some of his familiar powers from the comic books.”
This five part Armageddon crossover begins in the season eight premiere. Here’s the synopsis:
