Now that the team knows who they are looking for on The Flash, the next thing is to find out as much information about him as possible. Who’s really good at getting information? The detectives: Ralph Dibny (Hartley Sawyer) and Harrison Sherloque Wells (Tom Cavanagh). They find the same information we found out last week. Cicada, aka Orlin Dwyer (Chris Kline) lives a simple life. He goes to work and goes straight to the hospital. Gracie is his niece that he took guardianship of when her parents were killed in a meta attack. She is in a coma after the Enlightenment and Orlin visits her every night after work.
The dynamic duo returns to STAR labs to inform the team of Cicada’s routine and Barry (Grant Gustin) is ready to apprehend him. Sherloque reminds Barry that Dwyer still has a dagger that will dampen Barry’s speed. They would need to get the dagger away from Dwyer or destroy before taking him in. They would need a power dampener to dampen the dagger.
Nora (Jessica Parker Kennedy) suggests they make a weapon. And she knows exactly how to make it. They would need three things: a piece of metal alloy, a dark matter transmitter, and access to dark matter. That’s a great idea, but these items are not as available right now as they need them to be.
Oh, but Nora’s not done. She then suggests that they travel back in time to get the items. Savitar’s suit was made of the metal alloy that they need. Zoom used a dark matter transmitter to steal Barry’s speed. And the best time to access dark matter is when the particle accelerator exploded. And they can take these items without messing up the timeline. The final step is for them to set up a time hack. They bury the transmitter full of dark matter somewhere in the past, where Cicada won’t find it. Then come back and face Cicada in the present day and use the device to defeat him.
Funny how Nora has this plan all figured out. Sherloque recognizes the plan is laid all too well. Anyway…the team’s knows exactly when to find these things, but they are all in the past. Barry doesn’t want Nora time travelling with him. She begs him to let her go, but she’s already messed up the timeline once. Nora just wants an opportunity to fix what she created. Iris (Candice Patton) overhears their conversation and sides with Nora. She came up with the plan so Barry should trust her.
While Cisco (Carlos Valdes), Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) and Ralph work on pinpointing the dates Barry needs to travel to, Sherloque steals Nora’s journal. He can’t read it because Nora writes in symbols. Sherloque asks Cisco if he’s ever seen the symbols and he has. Barry wrote in those same symbols when he exited the speed force. In fact, he made a database of the symbols to translate what Barry was talking about. Sherloque uses the database to translate Nora’s journal.
First is the night the team destroyed Savitar. Oh and Barry invites Nora to run with him. When they get to the time frame they need to be at, Barry realizes that a time wraith followed them. Barry has to distract the time wraith, while Nora retrieves the piece of Savitar’s suit. She watches as Past Barry pushes Bizzaro Barry out of the Savitar suit and then Iris shoots him. A side of her parents that she’s never seen. Past Barry destroys the suit and Nora gets her alloy piece. It’s starts to fade in and out, so she runs back to the breach that she and her dad ran out of. Barry follows her and the wraith follows them.
Next stop, 2016, STAR Labs on the night that Zoom/Jay Garrick (Teddy Sears) stole Barry’s speed. Jay injects the dark matter/speed into his arm. Barry and Nora watch as he threatens the team, then runs away with Caitlin. Nora watches Past Barry and Iris console each other after Caitlin disappears. She likes watching this side of them.
Meanwhile Barry goes in to get the transmitter, but he can’t find it. Harry Wells (Cavanagh) from Earth 2 comes in with a gun pointed at Barry. He’s upset because he can’t find his daughter Jesse. He has the transmitter in his hands and almost breaks it. Barry stops him by telling him to look for Jesse using her frequency and Wells leaves him alone.
Barry takes the transmitter and Nora joins him in the lab. They turn around to leave, but Zoom is blocking their way. Zoom taunts Barry and notices Nora is a speedster too. He needs more speed, but they are able to get around him and take off. As they run into the speedforce, Zoom grabs Barry, trying to take him down. The time wraith swoops in and takes down Zoom, allowing Barry and Nora to get away. When they land, the transmitter is broken in two.
Barry knows they are back when he discovered Eobard Thawne (Cavanagh) had taken over Wells body. Thawne is the one who made the transmitter. Barry wants to leave, but Nora convinces him to stay and get Thawne’s help fixing the device. They make their way to the time vault at STAR labs, where Thawne has chained up a young Barry. He isn’t too surprised to see a future Barry, but he is surprised to meet Nora. Thawne fixes the transmitter. He’s pretty sure that he wins over the Flash, despite Barry telling him that he never goes home. Nora notices the tension and is very uncomfortable around Thawne.
They quickly leave to their next time frame. The night the particle accelerator exploded (Episode 1). Barry takes Nora to the time vault and sets up Gideon to use Savitar’s alloy to attract dark matter into the transmitter. While they wait, Nora asks Barry about Thawne. He tells her how Thawne killed his mother to make sure Barry would become a speedster. Nora wasn’t aware of how her grandmother died.
When the accelerator explodes, it doesn’t take long for the transmitter to fill up. They take the transmitter to the hospital. Dr. Ambres (Lossen Chambers) attend to both Harrison Wells and Past Barry, causing a distraction so no one can see what Barry and Nora are doing. They take the transmitter and phase it through the stone of a pillar to hide it. The duo returns to the present and prepare the team to go after Cicada.
Barry shows up at the hospital first. Orlin is in Gracie’s room on the fourth floor. He senses a meta and sees Barry waiting for him. Cicada knows that Barry is not alone. Vibe, XS, and the Elongated Man emerge, ready to take him down. Cicada throws his dagger, but it boomerangs around and hits the pillar of the hospital. The dark matter in the transmitter was more powerful than Cicada. The transmitter dampens the power of the dagger enough for Vibe to take the dagger and throw it through a breach into space.
Team Flash tells Cicada that it’s over…but it’s not. Cicada is more powerful than they though. He is able to retrieve the dagger from space and use it to dampen the powers of the metahumans standing before him. Caitlin and Sherloque jump out of a nearby van with a gun and run to aid Team Flash. Cicada disarms them, knocking everyone down to the ground.
Cicada regenerates his dagger and heads for Flash. He hears someone scream and sees Killer Frost blast him with cold air. Cicada flies across the parking lot. He takes one look at Killer Frost and flies away. Killer Frost is not a meta and she can hurt Cicada. The team finally has a real effective weapon.
The team goes back to the lab and check out Caitlin to make sure she’s okay. Nora looks for her journal and finds that Sherloque has it. He says he was intrigued by the writing in the journal. Nora says she made up the language and leaves. Sherloque goes back to Cisco’s computer to see what the journal says. The message “the speed force is malleable” scrolls across the screen.
Nora races to the past one more time to watch Henry (John Wesley Shipp) and Nora Allen (Michelle Harrison) outside on their porch laughing. Barry joins her and they watch the couple together. Nora asks if he ever thinks about changing what happened that night. He says he thinks about it all the time. The Allens go inside for the night and Nora challenges Barry to a race, calling him ‘old man.’
Later, Nora goes to Gideon and uploads her journal. She says she wants to send a personal message, but then decides to deliver it herself. She runs back to 2049. She goes to STAR Labs and tells someone in a cell that they need to talk. The person in the cell is Eobard Thawne with Harrison Wells’ face. And he agrees. They do need to talk.
The episode ended with one final scene. On Earth 90, a blast goes off in the night. After the smoke clears, several bodies of known heroes lay on the ground. Only one of them moves…the Flash (Shipp). He’s crawling toward a large book. A foot appears and someone else picks up the book. His name is Mar Novu (LaMonica Garrett). The Flash asks him not to do ‘this.’ Mar Novu tells the Flash that they brought this on themselves and now they will all perish. Mar Novu opens the book and a bright light emerges. The Flash runs away before anything can happen.
It was great to time travel through some of the greatest moments in Flash history. I would have liked to have seen more of the old characters, but this is okay. What about Wally!? It would have been nice to see him too.
So some burning questions after tonight’s episode:
Why is Nora working with Thawne?
Is Nora really Iris and Barry’s daughter? Eobard/Harrison asked if her name was Dawn.
Thawne has always been Barry’s greatest nemesis. It wouldn’t surprise me if he ran into the future, told Barry’s daughter a bunch of lies, and used her to change his own fate. Alas! We have to wait to find out what’s really going on because it’s Officially Crossover Week!
