The Flash welcomed Nora West-Allen (Jessica Parker Kennedy) to the team last week. She is a speedster and time traveled back in time to meet her father, Barry Allen (Grant Gustin). In the future, Barry disappears and never returns. Nora grew up without ever knowing her father. Barry allows her to stay to train her. This is great right? Maybe…there’s some obvious tension between Nora and Iris (Candice Patton).
Ralph (Hartley Sawyer) found the death certificate for Caitlin’s (Danielle Panabaker) father, but it’s a fake. What does this mean for Killer Frost? Cisco (Carlos Valdes) is still getting over his breakup with Gypsy (Jessica Camacho). Cecile (Danielle Nicolet) still has her meta abilities to read minds. And the new villian made an appearance. Who is he and what does he want?
After the cloaked man found Gridlock, the two fought. The cloaked man is able to strip Gridlock’s powers and kills him. The cloaked man (Chris Kline) goes to a locker room and takes off his suit. He’s just a regular looking guy. His co-worker comes in and assumes the man has been in another fight.
At the Joe’s (Jesse L. Martin) house, Barry and Nora reveal the real reason that Nora time traveled to the past. She shows them the headline from the future that shows that Flash never returned after disappearing. Iris isn’t worried though. She says they’ve changed the future before. Team Flash agrees. They will change things when the time comes. Jenna wakes up and the team relocate to the lab. Cecile calls for Joe and reveals that she can’t hear Jenna’s thoughts. She’s losing her meta powers. And Joe is okay with that.
Joe notices that Iris is bothered by something. She mentions that Nora always wants to be by Barry’s side. She gets it now, but still feels left out. Joe tells her to give it time.
Cisco is still moping around about his breakup with Gypsy. He says he constantly thinks about her. Everything he does, she’s there. He can even smell her perfume. Caitlin says they are kind of, sort of biologically linked through their vibing powers. Ralph arrives and asks Cisco to vibe the death certificate for Caitlin’s father, but Cisco can’t. Caitlin asks Ralph to help Cisco get over Gypsy.
New Kid on the Block
A woman named Vanessa Jansen (Erin Cummings) meets an old acquaintance after escaping from jail. She is a meta human with the ability to put a force field around her her. The friend shoots at her, but she reverses the bubble, boxing in the man with the gun. She can shrink the box, killing the man.
The next morning, Captain Singh (Patrick Sabongui) and Barry investigate the disappearance and possible murder of Bobby Moretti. The only evidence they have is a block of flesh. Nora shows up and tells Singh that she’s Barry’s intern. Barry covers saying he had so many cases to catch up on, that he hired a free intern. Nora jumps into the investigation and immediate contaminates the scene by picking up the block of flesh. After she examines it, she and Barry determine that the block is an entire human body.
Iris shows up at the crime scene. She gets Singh to talk to her off the record about Gridlock’s convoy wreck. Singh tells her that Gridlock is dead and several guards were injured. Iris thanks him and promises to give him any information that she finds. She sees Nora and Barry working side by side and seems bothered.
Caitlin and Ralph take Cisco to Ralph’s office and he hands him a list of 27 things to help him get over Gypsy. They start with affirmations, that apparently are Yogi Bear’s affirmations. Cisco doesn’t like it and asks to go home. Caitlin says Cisco helped her with the loss of Ronnie and Jay, so it’s her turn to help him. They decide to go with step 12 because change is good.
Iris heads to the hospital to talk to one of the injured guards about the attack on Gridlock. He doesn’t remember much because whoever attacked them knocked him out. When he woke up, Gridlock was already dead. Gridlock was the only target.
Cecile’s powers are fading in and out, but she is definitely losing the powers. She finds the device that Harry made to read people’s minds. Cecile wants to use it to hear Jenna. Joe doesn’t think it’s a good idea, but Cecile says she needs that connection. She’s has been able to hear Jenna since before she was born. The mind reading powers gave her a chance to be a perfect parent. She’s scared to lose the powers. Joe doesn’t want to use the device. He says they will figure it out. The baby cries and Joe goes to see what Jenna needs.
Barry and Nora go back to the lab to complete the analysis of the crime scene. They find traces of DNA from Vanessa Jansen. She was in a gang in jail and is probably at their hangout. They go to that location and find her with Bruno Moretti (Matty Finochio). Moretti knows Jansen killed his brother and wants the weapons she stole. Flash and XS arrive. Flash starts to formulate a plan, but XS runs off to save Moretti by pushing him inside of a truck. She faces Vanessa and is put inside of a box. Flash has to race to save her. Jansen throws Nora in the air and Flash has to chase it to save her, giving Jansen the opportunity to get away.
Back at Star Labs…Caitlin examines Nora and she is fine. Barry wants to find Vanessa, but their satellite is still down. And Cisco is still out of commission. Ralph whispers something strange to Cisco, snapping him out of his trance. He tells them that Vanessa makes dense cubes. Caitlin explains that Vanessa can manipulate atoms to create the blocks. The air is so dense that speedsters can’t phase through them. What would Cisco call this one? Blocked.
Barry looks at him weird. Caitlin explains that she and Ralph are working with Cisco to get over Gypsy. They leave to finish their work. Iris tells Barry that she is working on a lead and asks to use his lab. Barry decides to train with Nora, starting with math and physics.
A stylist shows up at Ralph’s office to help Cisco. Caitlin thinks a metamorphosis is just what Cisto needs. They give him a facial and new clothes. The stylist starts to cut the hair, but Cisco stops him. Instead he pulls his hair back and is happy with what he sees. Cisco hates it. Cisco turns the attention back to the death certificate. He still can’t vibe and suggests they call Joe to do some good ole detective work. Caitlin gets upset and tells them to forget about the certificate. She immediately calms down and leaves the office.
Barry continues his lessons with Nora but she doesn’t want to go over math and physics. She says the technology from her time is much more advanced. She wants to do the physical stuff. Nora shows him that she can already throw lightning, but ends up throwing it at Barry.
Iris uses Barry’s CCPD computer to look up the bodycam footage from Gridlock’s convoy. She hears yelling, some gunshots, and a strange breathing, like something vibrating.
Barry goes to Joe for advice about Nora. He’s frustrated because Nora is impatient and won’t listen to him. Joe just nods at Barry while he’s ranting. He asks Barry if he remembers his fourth grade science fair. Barry was supposed to make a volcano, but made a robot instead and almost burned down the gym. That was the first year that he lived with Joe. Barry says he wanted to impress Joe because Joe was his hero. BINGO!
Joe reminds Barry that everything Nora knows about her father, she learned from a museum. So of course she wants to impress Barry…that’s her dad. Joe suggests telling Nora that it’s okay to make mistakes, but always let her know that he loves her. Cecile overhears their conversation and kisses Joe for being a great dad.
Cisco finds Caitlin at Jitters…eating her feelings. He asks why she doesn’t want to investigate the death certificate. Caitlin is scared of the possibility that her dad wants nothing to do with her. If he is alive, he’s had plenty of time to find her. Cisco says he knows there’s no hope for him and Gypsy. She’s never coming back. Step 27 says if she was the love of your life, she’d be in it. Cisco says it’s better to know than to always wonder.
Barry shows Nora a tape of the mistakes he made when he first got his powers. The point of the tape to show her that not every hero starts out great. They have to work for it; perfect their skills. She asks if he thinks she will be great some day. He reminds her that she punched a satellite out of the sky. She was running so fast, he couldn’t see her. Nora apologizes for not listening. She just wants to make him proud. He says sometime the best way to impress someone is to show restraint.
Iris figures out a way to track Vanessa without their satellites. The air in the block is condensed and they can track that through weather satellites. Barry is excited, but Nora seems annoyed that Iris came up with the solution. Iris pulls up a weather map and the immediate find compressed air pockets. Barry and Nora leave to find Vanessa.
Moretti and his armed men confront Vanessa about the stolen weapons again. She puts up a block to shield herself from the bullets. The Flash and XS show up and move Moretti’s people one by one. They face Vanessa and before she can put a block on them, Flash uses his windmill arms to fight her off. Vanessa tires out and stops fighting.
Flash attempts to put power dampening cuffs on her but she throws one last block at him. XS radios Iris that Flash is in trouble. Iris sends Cisco and Ralph to the scene. Vanessa starts to shrink the block, but XS taunts her. Vanessa starts throwing blocks at XS. XS starts running circles around Vanessa, trying to tire her out. Vanessa slows down enough for XS to put the cuffs on her. The block around Flash disappears as Vibe and the Elongated Man arrive.
A black dagger flies through the air and hits Vanessa in the chest. Team Flash turns around to find a cloaked man walking toward them. Flash orders XS to take Vanessa to the hospital. The cloaked man throws another dagger into the ground, disabling the metas’ powers. Flash, Vibe and Elongated Man fight the cloaked man.
Vibe goes after the dagger, but can’t pull it out of the ground. The cloaked man pulls it out, cutting Vibe in the process. He starts fighting Vibe and Elongated Man steps in. They are both knocked out by the cloaked man. With Vibe and Elongated Man knocked out, the cloaked man.
Iris and Caitlin are listening in. Iris hears the man breathing funny…almost vibrating. Like in the video from Gridlock’s convoy attack. She tells Barry to run, but Barry is on the ground. The cloaked man bend over Flash, ready to stab him with the dark dagger. XS returns. The cloaked man looks at her and walks away. Once he’s gone, XS checks on Flash.
Caitlin tends to the cuts on Cisco’s hands. He tells her how the dagger took their powers. He stands up and grabs the death certificate. Cisco says he’s ready to vibe if Caitlin wants to. She nods in agreement and he touches her shoulder. The vibe doesn’t last long, but it was enough for Caitlin to see her mother sign the death certificate.
Barry calls for them to the control room. Iris tells them about her investigation into the attack on Gridlock’s convoy. She plays the video from the bodycam and they listen. They hear the man breathing. It’s the same as the cloaked man and they try to figure out what it sounds like. Nora says it sounds like a cicada. Barry realizes that she knows who the man is and asks, “Who is Cicada?”
It’s kind of funny. Barry gets to experience what it’s like to be Joe. Now he has a kid that is impatient, ambitious and likes to take risks. Poor Joe. He has three of those kids. No wonder he need a hiding place. Nora was so ready to jump into the action that she took unnecessary risks. At this rate, Barry will go gray sooner than later.
It was nice to Iris back in action as a reporter. I really like the empowerment that they give her, but there is always room for more. This thing with Nora will have to be addressed soon as well. Communication is always important in all relationships. I think that’s one thing that shows like The Flash try to drill home, but tend to forget with the start of each season.
I also like how much Ralph has changed. He has more depth to him…so far… and can still be that comic relief that the show has always had. Cisco’s situation was funny as well, but probably shouldn’t have been. He couldn’t even give a proper meta name, though the one he came up with worked well. Cisco has needed something to give his character growth. We all go through breakups, so why not Cisco too?
As always, the season is starting off strong with some compelling story arcs for individual characters and for the team as a whole. I really hope to see some resolution between Iris and Nora, sooner than later. Especially since Barry hasn’t realized yet what the situation is doing to Iris. They are better communicators than that. They really all need someone to put everything into perspective for them. Where’s Harrison Wells when you need him?
