Earthers, Belters and Martians! We’ve got some intel for you regarding The Expanse‘s fifth season courtesy of Entertainment Weekly! Not only that, but we have an exclusive EW image of Amos back on Earth!
Now, Entertainment Weekly sat with The Expanse showrunner Naren Shankar to dish on all things Season Five. When we last left our characters in Season Four, Belter rebel Marco Inaros (Keon Alexander) was sending a bevy of stealth asteroids toward Earth. Naomi (Dominique Tipper) learned of her son Filip’s (Jasai Chase Owens) whereabouts, and we’ll see the fruit of her efforts to track him down in Season Five.
The released photo of Amos (Wes Chatham) shows him bloody and bearded in Baltimore. He’s also shirtless, which would normally be the standout aspect of a photo like this, but the blood splatters are far more intriguing. Amos looks positively spooked, so whatever he encountered in his old stomping grounds must be formidable.

Shankar delved into the theme for Season Five: “sins of the past.” While that tends to be a pervasive theme throughout The Expanse, I’m curious to see how they further explore it in the fifth season. Amos is reconnecting with his past by returning to Earth. Naomi is reconnecting with her past by searching for her son. Shankar notes that everything we’ve seen in the past thus far will “come to a head all at the same time.”
Additionally, Shankar touched on the relationship between Holden (Steven Strait) and Naomi, and how the latter’s deep dive into her past will affect their standing. They chose each other, an Earther and a Belter, amid the noise and chaos of the ensuing war between Earth and the Belt. Shankar also talked about the close bonds formed between everyone aboard the Rocinante, from Season One to the present. He assures us that Holden and Naomi will start Season Five from “a very warm and supportive place.” I’ve no doubt Holden will support Naomi regardless of what transpires.
Of course, Drummer (Cara Gee) was also left in an interesting place at Season Four’s end. She quit the OPA, walked away from Fred Johnson and even declined being Ashford’s XO. Shankar hinted at the direction of Drummer’s story for Season Five:
Well, politics, and war, and strife, they have a way of finding you. It’s hard to avoid them. What we’re going to find from her in season five, her story line speaks to that very directly.
Oh, and book lovers will be immensely satisfied with Amos’ Earth storyline. Shankar commented that it’s one of his favorite plotlines from the season. That gives me hope, folks!
