Are you ready to hunt down a mythical serpent? Apple TV plus has officially unveiled the first trailer for their upcoming limited series, The Essex Serpent based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Sarah Perry. The series is directed by Clio Barnard and written by Anna Symon. The trailer gives us a peek into what we can expect to see in this mythical tale.

The Essex Serpent is set in Victorian London. It follows newly widowed Cora Seaborne (Claire Danes), who travels to Essex after the death of her abusive husband to investigate reports of a mythical serpent. She forms a surprising bond of science and skepticism with the local pastor (Tom Hiddleston). However, when tragedy strikes the small town, Cora is blamed for attracting the creature and bringing ruin to them all. The trailer introduces the different elements we can expect to see play out through the series, including the relationship between Cora and the pastor and Cora and her companion Martha (Hayley Squires).

Cora’s passion for uncovering the secrets of the mythical serpent who has made its home in the small English town can be felt throughout the trailer. But this isn’t a fun trip to find Nessie. As The Essex Serpent‘s trailer continues, the series’s darker, more paranoia-filled tones come to the forefront. The longer Cora spends in Essex, the worse things seem to be getting, and the town’s people are turning against her. The series looks to be pitting science and religion against each other. Is the serpent real? Does it have some connection to Cora? Why are people obsessed with finding esoteric meaning in whatever happens to us?

The Essex Serpent stars Danes, Hiddlestone, Squires, Frank Dillane and Clémence Poésy. It will drop the first two episodes on Apple TV Plus on May 13, 2022. After that, it will release one episode every Friday until it concludes on June 10, 2022. You can watch the full trailer below. What do you think of this new series?
