Our dreams have finally come true! The Doubleclicks‘ Teaching a Robot to Love is coming to the stage under the direction of Ashley Ward. The science-fun-filled musical is the brain creation of Laser Malena-Webber, their sister Aubrey Turner and composer, musical director and producer E. Aaron Wilson. It started off as a musical album created during COVID-19 with the hope that it would one day see the stage. And now we’re here! Excuse us while we do my happy dance for the fifth time since this news dropped.
Teaching a Robot to Love tells the tale of Mary Coral (Aliza Pearl), who is on the road to creating the most outstanding science program of all time, thus making her dreams come true. Then, in a turn of perfect events, she is asked to do her summer internship at Advernado. But that’s when things go a bit sideways. What happens when Mary meets Faun (Jessica Reiner-Harris), a bossy intern obsessed with pushing the boundaries? Or interns who want to beat Mary to the punch?

Alongside Pearl and Reiner-Harris, the stage performance of Teaching a Robot to Love includes Bonnie Gordon, Kelby Jo McLellan, Rob Warner and Xander Jeanneret. Eric Michaud is the choreographer with Morgan Peters and Kiri Callaghan producing. Wilson will also be returning to serve as the musical director. The original musical album won the hearts of listeners when it was released in November of last year and isn’t losing steam anytime soon.
Teaching a Robot to Love is an allegory for trans parenting, and LGBTQIA+ friendship underscored with joy, laughs and tons and tons of science. It makes my heart happy that it will be coming to life during Pride Month and during the Hollywood Fringe Festival! If you cannot make the show live, you can purchase tickets to stream it live from anywhere in the world. The event runs from June 9 to 26, 2022. You can find dates and buy tickets here. And if this wasn’t enough good news, we’ve got some photos to get you super excited!
