Summary

“Sherlock Holmes is known for his investigatory prowess, but I bet you didn’t know he was particularly intrigued by the paranormal and the occult. When corpses begin reanimating at Highgate Cemetery, Holmes is hired to discover why. The truth turns out to be more disturbing and deeply rooted than ever imagined.

This chronicle is a collection of cases that span three decades and culminates in the revelation of a horrific master plan of otherworldly proportions. Holmes starts to notice that each of his supernatural cases has some connection to an ancient alien race called the Mi-Go. Will Sherlock Holmes uncover what the Fungi of Yuggoth have in store for the human race? Or will he just become another sacrifice?”

Sherlock Holmes in Lovecraft Country

The Cthulhu Casebooks: Sherlock Homes and the Highgate Horrors by James Lovegrove finds a nice balance between Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and H.P. Lovecraft and blends them seamlessly. The author does an excellent job of intertwining the two by relating uncanny findings to famous Sherlock cases. This makes me believe that Holmes was investigating these horrors in the shadows throughout his prolific career.

Lovegrove even integrates other well-known Sherlock characters into the Lovecraft narrative, including Irene Adler, Mrs. Hudson and Dr. Watson, of course. Irene Adler’s part in this saga is particularly intriguing and holds to her character. The author also gives us plenty of the Holmes and Watson banter we all know and love.

Each case is creepier than the last and tosses us a morsel of a much larger feast. Otherworldly discoveries, ferocious fungi, strange illnesses and ancient aliens are just some of the terrifying tales in Sherlock Holmes and the Highgate Horrors.

The entire mystery is written in a way that allows you to solve the case alongside Sherlock. After each part, I would make new connections and could not wait to see the next revelation. This one is a well-put-together mystery from beginning to end. Lastly, the cover design is beautiful from front to back; I love having this on my shelf. The entire collection is easy on the eyes.

To Read or Not to Read

Sherlock Holmes and the Highgate Horrors is the literary crossover I didn’t know I needed. Sherlock Holmes and Lovecraftian lore go together like peanut butter and mysterious, viscous jelly. Overall, it’s a great read, especially for fans of Conan Doyle and Lovecraft. You don’t need to be a Sherlock or Lovecraft enthusiast to enjoy this one, but it certainly is more rewarding. This mystery is a disturbing ride with an ending that will chill you to the bone.
