Is there a Downton Abbey sized hole in your life? If there is and you’re a fan of British drama, especially stories surrounding the royal family, then the The Crown will quite possibly be right up your alley.
Based on real events, the upcoming Netflix original series follows the political rivalries and romance behind Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and events that shaped the second half of the 20th century. Just to be clear, Queen Elizabeth II is the reigning monarch of the UK, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are her grandson and granddaughter-in-law. Got that? Ok, good, let’s move on.
Basically this is a biographical show based on people that are still very much alive and events many people watching may remember. It’s also the most expensive Netflix project to date, reportedly costing $156 million to produce.
If that still isn’t enough to entice you, then consider that Matt Smith (yes, that Matt Smith of Doctor Who fame) will play Prince Phillip, The Duke of Edinburgh, the long time love of Queen Elizabeth II who is being played by Claire Foy (Wolf Hall).
The Crown focuses on Queen Elizabeth II as a 25-year-old newlywed faced with the daunting prospect of leading the world’s most famous monarchy while forging a relationship with legendary Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill. The British Empire is in decline, the political world is in disarray, and a young woman takes the throne….a new era is dawning. Peter Morgan’s masterfully researched scripts reveal the Queen’s private journey behind the public facade with daring frankness. Prepare to be welcomed into the coveted world of power and privilege and behind locked doors in Westminster and Buckingham Palace….the leaders of an empire await.
Mark your calendars and binge to your hearts content, The Crown hits Netflix on November 4, 2016.
