Who exactly is Dick Turpin?
To Americans, the name may draw a blank. However, he is a renowned, romanticized thief from the 18th century. Apparently, he is as famous as Robin Hood in England — at least, that’s what Noel Fielding said at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour on Monday, February 5, promoting his role as the highwayman in The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin. A trailer has been released for the new Apple TV+ series.
The show will certainly not be telling the true life of the man, according to Fielding and executive producer Kenton Allen. Instead, they will turn a murderer into a pacifist in this re-imaginative comedy.

Here’s what we know about the six-episode show and how it is anything but the real story of Dick Turpin.
Trailer Reveals Unlikely Group of Outlaws Taking on the English Highways

Nearly 300 years ago, an Englishman named Dick Turpin took to the countryside to a life of crime. He was a poacher, horse thief and burglar in real life. The man was known for his steed, Black Bess, and the illegal deeds he performed. He is most closely associated with highway robbery and was executed on two charges of horse theft in 1939, following years of killing and stealing. After his death, he was romanticized by poets and novelists alike, such as William Harrison Ainsworth in his novel Rookwood.
His likeness is once again being reimagined for The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin but in a much less vicious way. There isn’t murder, but nondeadly crime with the opportunity to provide feedback. The show’s idea is similar to Hulu’s The Great, taking a historical individual and giving them a spin.

“He was quite a nasty criminal, murdering criminal. So, we’ve reimagined him as an inclusive pacifist. He’s a vegan, so he’s more about creativity than violence,” Fielding said during the Apple’s Television Critics Association panel. The trailer, posted to YouTube, shows Turpin becoming the leader of a band of outlaws, and the “Essex Gang” avoids the thief-taker Jonathan Wilde (Hugh Bonneville).
Cast and Crew

Fielding takes on the titular Dick Turpin and also serves as an Executive Director on the project. The actor is best known for The Mighty Boosh and as a co-presented of The Great British Bakeoff. Standing directly opposed to him is Bonneville, who played in Downton Abbey. Other members of the cast include Ellie White (The Windsors), Marc Wootton (Nativity!), Duayne Boachie (Hollyoaks), Tamsin Greigh (Black Books), Asim Chaudhry (The Sandman), Dolly Wells (Doll & Em), Mark Heap (Stardust), Joe Wilkinson (Sex Education), Geoff McGivern (Free Rein), Samuel Leakey (Gretel & Hansel) and Kiri Flaherty.
