10 Questions We Need Answered in THE BUCCANEERS Season 2

The Buccaneers just wrapped its first season with a wedding and an escape.

Thankfully, that’s not the end. We learned earlier today that Apple has renewed its Bridgerton-esque period drama for a second season. We now have plenty of loose narrative threads to explore in future stories, thanks to Season 2 being a guarantee.

On that note, let’s dive into our 10 pressing questions that need answers once The Buccaneers‘ sophomore season rolls around.

Where Did Guy and Jinny Go?

In the final moments of Season 1, we see Nan (Kristine Frøseth) devising a plan for her pregnant older sister, Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse), to escape her abusive husband, Lord Seadown (Barney Fishwick). Nan’s lover, Guy (Matthew Broome), accompanies Jinny to an undisclosed place that requires tickets. Where are they heading? My guess is that it’s not anywhere in England. I also can’t picture them traveling to New York, given that’s where Jinny’s from, and Seadown will know to look there.

Who Is Nan’s Mother?

Tracy St. George (Adam James) informs Patti St. George (Christina Hendricks) that Nan’s biological mother is on the estate grounds for Nan and Theo’s (Guy Remmers) wedding. Which begs the question: Who the heck is she? I recall seeing conjecture on Reddit about Miss Testvalley (Simone Kirby), the Brightlingsea/Marable governess, being her mom, but I never bought that theory. While there might be more narrative weight if we discover it’s someone we know, I can see her being a former maid, like Tracy initially told Nan. I assume he only lied about her being alive.

I’m excited to see this unidentified woman interact with Patti. We’ll undoubtedly get juicy scenes there.

What Will Happen When Conchita and Richard Step Into Their New Roles?

The Season 1 finale also brought about a plot twist for Richard (Josh Dylan) and Conchita (Alisha Boe). After cutting ties with his parents, Lord and Lady Brightlingsea (Anthony Calf and Fenella Woolgar), Richard’s father revealed he was dying. Since Richard’s the eldest child, the Brightlingsea title passes to him. That means Conchita will get a plum promotion.

While Conchita hoped to escape his racist parents, at least she’ll have power over Richard’s mom. I’ll be curious to see them step into their new roles. Will Conchita take to it with ease, or will she struggle? Conchita is a survivor. I can picture her thriving now that the dynamic has changed.

Will Theo Learn the Truth about Nan and Guy?

Remember when Nan and Guy slept together on the eve of Nan’s wedding? I wonder if Theo will learn the truth about their union of the flesh (hee-hee) or if he already knows. He’s repeatedly shown he’s aware of Nan’s feelings for Guy. For Nan, it’s a marriage of convenience as she endeavors to protect her sister and mother (Patti). Some small part of Theo must understand that Nan’s heart belongs to Guy unless he assumes she’ll “learn” to love him. I predict he’ll find out in Season 2 in an explosive, confrontational scene with Nan. Drama!

How Will Mabel and Honoria Stay Together?

Listen, Mabel (Josie Totah) and Honoria (Mia Threapleton) are the epitome of adorable. I’m so happy their love story will continue. I wonder, though, how Mabel plans to remain in England, especially since she called off her engagement to Miles (Shobhit Piasa). Her other option is her older sister, Lizzy (Aubri Ibrag), but she’s not tied to anyone. Mabel is resourceful, and I’ve no doubt she’ll find a way to stay with Honoria. Love must prevail. I’m weary and jaded, y’all. I need this.

Will We See a More Mature Nan in Season 2?

Nan saving Jinny from Seadown (who I hope gets his comeuppance in Season 2) and marrying Theo to protect her loved ones showcases a more responsible side. Could Mature Nan make her appearance in Season 2? The Season 1 finale is a turning point for her. She now understands the gravity of her position as the newly-minted Duchess of Tintagel. I’d love to see her engage in the power games of the affluent while exerting her influence to protect her family.

Will Lizzy Find Love? Better Yet, Will She Finally Be Happy?

If you’ve read my recaps, you know how much I love Lizzy. Her painfully relatable arc and a compelling performance from Aubri Ibrag make her a character worth rooting for (along with Conchita and Mabel). We’ve already seen her traumatized and struggling. I’d love for Lizzy to thrive in Season 2.

Now that she’s learning to heal from her trauma and abuse (the line about not carrying Seadown’s shame profoundly resonated with me), perhaps we can see a happy Lizzy. Maybe love is around the corner. She doesn’t need a romantic companion to be complete, but she deserves someone in her corner.

Does Theo Know About Jinny’s Situation, and Does He Realize That Nan Doesn’t Love Him?

I’d like to think that Theo is aware of the Jinny situation. After all, his mother, the Dowager (Amelia Bullmore), is. That said, she and Nan could’ve decided to keep Theo in the dark. I suppose the second part of this question harkens back to whether Theo learns the truth about Nan and Guy. There is the possibility that Theo doesn’t realize his feelings are unrequited. However, I believe Nan loves Theo, but it’s more platonic.

As much as I detest the idea, the love triangle will most likely remain in play in the next season. Perhaps Theo will find love with someone else. Petition to bring Jean (Francesca Corney) back into the equation? Although let’s be honest: she deserves better than someone who initially rejected her.

Will We See Miss Testvalley Again?

Richard is moving on from Miss Testvalley’s abuse and manipulation, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see the governess again. She could return to stir the pot and cause more trouble. Or perhaps we’ll get more insight into her inappropriate relationship and the nature of power imbalances.

Will We Finally Get More Friendship Moments in Season 2?

Please, The Buccaneers, I beg of you — give us significantly more friendship moments in Season 2. Initially, I assumed this series would make our titular ladies’ bond its focal point. We can never have too many shows that hone in on female friendship, with women elevating each other instead of destroying one another. Maybe Jinny’s situation will deepen the Buccaneers’ relationship. I’d also love more focus on Conchita, Lizzy, Mabel and Jinny in the second season. Fingers crossed.
