When Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions work together, you know you are going to get something so terrifying that it is good. Now add director Scott Derrickson and you have something genuinely sinister – The Black Phone. It is excellent to see Derrickson return to his roots and work alongside a company that is a household name in the horror genre. And now, we get the chance to see this tale come to life in the film’s first trailer.

The Black Phone follows young Finney Shaw (Mason Thames), a shy but very clever 13-year-old boy who has been abducted by a sadistic killer (Ethan Hawke) parading as a traveling magician. He ends up locked in a soundproof basement with a mattress and a black phone. Unfortunately, that phone is dead. However, when the phone starts ringing, Finney can hear the voices of the previous victims and they have beneficial information for him.
The trailer shows two sides of this terrifying story. We have Finney’s battle to escape with help from the other side and Gwen’s (Madeleine McGraw) nightmares that seem to be giving her information on where to find Finney. It is a race against the clock to catch this madman and save Finney. I love the look of The Black Phone. It has this old-school horror film mixed with a supernatural twist. Hawke is a fabulous actor and from just what we can see in the trailer, he will take this role as The Grabber to a whole new level.
The Black Phone drops into theaters on February 4, 2022. We have dropped the trailer and poster art below! What do you think of this new horror thriller? Let us know in the comments below and on social media!
