Are you ready for a magic trick? You might want to skip the one from the new trailer for Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions’ The Black Phone. We were first introduced to this eerie psychological horror film last fall and got our first peek at Ethan Hawke‘s terrifying performance. Then, the film was pushed back from February to late June and we were left wondering just how terrifying his performance was going to be.

The new trailer for The Black Phone answers that question and then some. The trailer opens with Finney Shaw (Mason Thames) being abducted by the sadistic traveling magician and locked in his soundproof basement. The trailer goes on to show how the past victims of the man with the black balloons contact Finney and help him learn how to escape while his friend Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) is getting visions that lead her to Finney.

But what we really get to see is more of Hawke’s performance in The Black Phone. And it is terrifying. The way he balances between uncomfortably friendly to downright sinister and terrifying. We see him going from befriending the young Finney and providing him with food to screaming and ranting. And nothing is more terrifying than the jumps between the pale white face paint to the devil-like mask. It is a great peek into what kind of performance we can expect when the film drops.

The Black Phone is produced, directed and co-written by Scott Derrickson alongside screenplay writer C. Robert Cargill. It is set to drop in theaters on June 24, 2022.
