2018 has been an amazing year for superhero nerds. This year alone has seen several records being broken within the genre, with the highest-grossing, highest-budget, most groundbreaking superhero movies ever made gracing our screens in 2018.
Whether you’re more Marvel than DC or more Spiderman than Batman, you can’t deny that this year has felt like one glorious release after another. Join us as we rank the best superhero movies of 2018.
5. Incredibles 2
The whole world spent the first half of the year bracing themselves for the long-awaited trip down memory lane of Incredibles 2, released a full 14 years after the original. The second half of the year was spent making plans to immediately go and watch it again. This highly originally sequel is one of the most genuinely touching superhero films ever made, with Mr. and Mrs. Incredible having plenty of appeal for both adults who saw the original and children coming to the franchise for the first time.
4. Avengers: Infinity War
The long-awaited third installment of the Avengers series, as well as the 19th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series, certainly didn’t disappoint. It is by far the most expensive film ever made, costing a dizzying $400 million to produce, whilst grossing over $2 billion at the box office, making it the highest grossing film of the year. As well as smashing box office records, this film could also be the first superhero film to scoop up an Academy Award in years if the fans are to be believed, although the latest Oscars betting odds suggest you’re better off placing your money elsewhere.
One of the most original and relatively low-budget superhero flicks to make a splash this year, the Korean film Psychokineses has left critics absolutely spellbound. Described by one critic as “what Hancock could have been”, this unique film follows a middle-aged man who develops telekinetic powers and tries to use them to help his struggling daughter, rather than take on aliens or robots. It’s a beautifully-shot story which provides a good antidote to the seriously OTT antics of The Avengers. Definitely one of the biggest surprises of the year.
2. Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse
Just as audiences and even die-hard fans were starting to tire of the latest, increasingly disappointing Spidey reboots, this animated charmer came along and blew us all away. It’s a visual feast that has already been described by pundits as “the greatest superhero film ever made”, one that completely departs from the Spiderman universe that we’re all familiar with. Expect plenty more releases to be set in the so-called “spiderverse” in the years to come.
1. Black Panther
There can only be one film that is truly the best of the year. It’s the film that everyone is still talking about despite being released at the very start of the year. Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther is undeniably the most radical and boundary-pushing superhero film of the decade, if not in history. The stellar cast, which includes a transfixing performance from Chadwick Boseman in the lead, have made their permanent mark on popular culture and have brought Afrofuturism firmly into the mainstream. It’s a superhero movie which actually makes a point worth listening to, which is why it belongs in the hall of fame.
