Hello, horror lovers! Welcome to another edition of Underrated Horror Movie of the Month. If you are new to the column, I will explain this. On the second and fourth Friday of every month, I talk about a horror movie I feel is underrated and underloved. The featured films come from any subgenre and time. Today, I am talking about the 2017 film The Belko Experiment. Stick around to see why I think this film rocks.
About The Belko Experiment
What happens when your office job is actually a psychotic social experiment? Some of the employees at Belko are about to find out. The office building, located in an isolated area of Bogotá, Colombia, is about to become a killing ground.
On what starts as an average morning, employees arrive at the office to begin their day. Oddly, none of the local employees are at work. Before the day has a chance to start, an ominous voice comes over the intercom with a shocking message. The Powers That Be expects the office workers to kill each other in specific numbers. If they don’t, The Voice promises dire consequences. The only question remaining is whether to kill or be killed.

The Belko Experiment stars John Gallagher Jr., Tony Goldwyn, Adria Arjona, John C McGinley, Melonie Diaz and Sean Gunn. James Gunn wrote the screenplay, and Greg McLean directed it.
This movie has a 55 percent Tomatometer Score and a 40 percent Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.
My Thoughts
If you enjoy stories such as The Purge, The Hunger Games and Lord of the Flies, you will enjoy The Belko Experiment. Essentially, this movie is a battle royale with abundant social commentary. Can anyone definitively say how they would react if put in a situation where you have to choose between your life and the lives of others? Each character reacts in a different and equally realistic way.
The story starts incredibly strong. There is no time wasted in getting right to the action. It does begin to lag a bit after the midway mark, but the ending is stellar. It is difficult to discuss the story in depth without giving away spoilers, but suffice it to say it is intriguing and moves at a decent rate.

For the most part, the acting in The Belko Experiment is spectacular. Sadly, the character development is not as fleshed out as I would prefer, but that is not on the actors. They do an exemplary job of bringing each character’s entirely human facets to life. Plus, let’s face it, anytime Sean Gunn graces the screen, it is bound to be a good time.
For the lovers of gory horror, this is a movie you need in your life. To say this film is a blood bath would be an egregious understatement. From the moment The Voice first echoes through the intercom until the credits roll, the graphic scenes are consistent. I like the shock value of the gory scenes, but my primary complaint is that some of the ones in this particular movie become repetitive, therefore losing some of the shock factor.
Part of what makes excellent gore in a horror movie is the effects team. In my opinion, The Belko Experiment is on the same level as Saw in terms of the bloody effects. The spurts, gushes and sprays are all reasonably realistic, and the anger-fueled attacks are just extreme enough.
