We finally have news coming out of DC regarding the latest Batman film. Reported today by Deadline, director Matt Reeves‘ take on the Caped Crusader has earned a summer release date. And we finally know just where our current Batman stands.
Since signing on to direct the film in 2017, Matt Reeves has been quietly making his way through pre-production on this film. And now we know just when we’ll be able to see his vision. The release date is currently set for June 25, 2021. A little over two years away. Reeves has made a few of his ideas known about what he wants to bring to the mythos. One idea that the director has spoken about was a “noir detective film”, which is something we’ve yet to see from a live action Batman film. Reeves’ has also said that the film won’t be an origin story, nor an adaptation of the popular comic, Year One. However, he has said it would focus on a younger Bruce Wayne.
So what about the man behind the cowl? After the rollercoaster that was Ben Affleck being attached to the film, it’s being reported that the actor is stepping down. It’s seemingly confirmed with the actor retweeting the news. The actor added “Excited for #TheBatman in Summer 2021 and to see @MattReevesLA vision come to life.” So Batfleck is no longer, at least currently. It’s unclear just where he and the rest of the Justice League actors stand in regards to future DC films, with the exception of Jason Momoa and Gal Gadot whose movies were highly successful.
This feels like the right move. If the focus is a younger Bruce Wayne, than having the older actor grunt his way through scenes wouldn’t be ideal. Not to mention this wave of will he, won’t he with Affleck has been cumbersome. We can finally start to focus on what we’ll be getting from Matt Reeves. There is currently no casting news regarding who will take on the mantle of the Bat but let the speculation and fan-casting begin!
What do you think of the news? Are you excited for another Batman? Are you having a Sad Affleck moment? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for continuing news on DC film. The Batman will fly into theaters June 25th, 2021.
