The human race is in peril. On Wednesday, Syfy unveiled the official trailer for its latest science fiction offering, The Ark. From the mind of co-showrunner/executive producer Dean Devlin (Independence Day, Stargate), this series looks to bring the network back to its sci-fi roots. Jonathan Glassner (Stargate SG-1) will serve as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Devlin.
Here’s an official synopsis per NBCUniversal:
“Created by Dean Devlin, The Ark takes place 100 years in the future when planetary colonization missions have begun as a necessity to help secure the survival of the human race. The first of these missions on a spacecraft known as Ark One encounters a catastrophic event causing massive destruction and loss of life. With more than a year left to go before reaching their target planet, a lack of life-sustaining supplies and loss of leadership, the remaining crew must become the best versions of themselves to stay on course and survive.”

The Ark stars Christie Burke as Lt. Sharon Garnet, Richard Fleeshman as Lt. James Brice, Reece Ritchie as Lt. Spencer Lane, Stacey Read as Alicia Nevins and Ryan Adams as Angus Medford.
In the trailer, we see the members of Ark One en route to their target planet. Naturally, as is the modus operandi for science fiction shows, something goes awry. Sharon Garnet and the others try to decide their next course of action. This unknown catastrophic event leaves a significant chunk of their crew dead, with dwindling resources and no true leader to point them in the right direction. Not only that, but they’re too far away from Earth to seek help. The stakes are impossibly high.
From said trailer, we learn the best and brightest minds have been chosen to terraform new planets to secure humanity’s survival. However, it appears they’ll struggle to join forces to save themselves.

I’m not entirely blown away by the trailer, but my interest is piqued enough by the show’s premise to give it a whirl. Syfy tends to produce solid work on the science fiction front. That said, their penchant for canceling programs in their prime makes me nervous for The Ark. For living in the purported “Golden Age of Television,” we don’t have a ton of bona fide sci-fi shows from which to choose. I hope this one succeeds in that regard.
You can check out the official key art and trailer below. The Ark premieres on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at 10/9c on your Syfy affiliate, with next-day streaming on Peacock.
