Halloween is just around the corner and everyone is ready to get their spook on. If you are a fan of horror video games (honestly who isn’t?) I have just the list for you. Any of these games are going to be must plays to get the perfect amount of spook factor. Regardless of whether you want to play a single player style horror survival game or a multiplayer asymmetrical horror game, we have you covered!
Even though Outlast from Red Barrels is from 2013, it still finds a way to scare us every time. This first person survival horror video game has players taking on the role of a reporter as they enter a psychiatric hospital taken over by murderous patients. Plot twist, there is no fighting in this game. The player needs to run and hide in order to survive.
Until Dawn is a role playing game styled horror video game that has you jumping from character to character during different parts of the story. Supermassive Games really took the time to create a story that will only work to confuse and scare you more. The game relies on choices you make throughout game play, which can change the outcomes on who lives and who survives.
Until Dawn is available now for the PS4.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
There is just something scary about not being able to fight back against the horrors. Amnesia: The Dark Descent does everything to intensify this. You are dropped into a world with no memories and idea of where you are. The only thing you can do is investigate the scary castle hallways and hide from the terrifying inhabitants. It is a little more on the mature rating so maybe play this after the kids go to sleep, if you can survive in the dark.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent is available now for PC on Steam, PS4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch.
The most recent addition to the Blair Witch franchise while a bit frustrating at times was indeed scary. The first person horror survival game features its fair share of jump scares as well as the horrors that dwell within our minds. The end game features some of the most terrifying moments but be prepared for an increase in difficulty.
Blair Witch is available now on PC through Steam and on Xbox One.
The Beast Inside
The most recent game to release, this is a new top contender for best horror game of the year. The Beast Inside follows to separate stories as they intertwine and spread the horror from both sides. The game is full of puzzles, combat and some of the best jump scares I have seen in a long time. The game even features extra quests that you can complete to learn more about cryptanalysts and the Cold War.
The Beast Inside is available now for PC on Steam.
Paranormal spooks are what really get me going and Pacify is exactly what I needed. As a new member of the Paranormal Activity Helpers, your team is hired to investigate a haunted house. It’s here where things go just a tad bit south. A haunted girl swaps back and froth between good and evil as your attempt to pacify her and escape the house. What is great, is you can play solo or with up to three friends in either co-op or a PVP match. Prepared to be scared by a little girl guys, because it is going to happen.
Pacify is available now on PC through Steam.
White Day: A Labyrinth Named School
Have you ever had to go to school after hours? The oddly quiet halls and weird flickering lights that you just don’t see during the day tend to set you off right? Now pop that into a video game with a murderous janitor, spooky ghosts around every corner, and enough puzzles to keep you on your toes and you have White Day: A Labyrinth Named School. The game has random jump scares to keep players on their toes. You can also unlock different ghost stories as you progress to figure out what has happened on school grounds.
White Day: A Labyrinth Named School is available now on PC through Steam and PS4.
Dead By Daylight
Did you think I could go an entire list without mentioning Dead By Daylight? The 4 vs 1 horror survival horror game can be scary for several different reasons. The jump scares thanks to hag’s traps, a stealthy Michael sneaking up behind our the terrifying group of survivors you have to play with or against. While it doesn’t have the typical single story horror atmosphere and tropes, it is definitely a horror game work playing.
Dead By Daylight is available now on PC through Steam, Xbox One, PS4 and the Nintendo Switch.
The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan
The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan is another horror game that focuses on multiplayer and player choice. Every character has the ability to live or die and it is all up to you. Set off on what is supposed to be a fun holiday diving trip only to find yourself on a ghost ship from hell. While the game can be played in single player mode, they recommend never playing along.
The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan is available now on PC through Steam, PS4 and Xbox One.
Layers of Fear
The original Layers of Fear game gave me the weirdest nightmares for days after playing. The single player first person horror game follows an artists story as he returns to his family home after some pretty terrible stuff has happened. Explore one of the weirdest homes that as doors locking behind you and hallways and rooms changing all the time. While there is of course jump scares that liter your journey, the real horror comes from unraveling just what happened and how crazy this artist truly is.
Layers of Fear is available now on PC through Steam, PS4, Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch.
Regardless what horror video game you choose to play, remember to wait until it is really late, turn off all the lights and make sure to throw your headset on. Create the perfect atmosphere to get spooked this Halloween! Have a favorite horror game you love to play this time of year? Let us know in the comments below!
