Keeley and Rebecca hold hands in Keeley's PR office in Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 1, "Smells Like Mean Spirit."

Our collective comfort show is back! Ted Lasso arrived with a bang, blessing us with a solid season opener with “Smells Like Mean Spirit.” It’s hilariously heartfelt while propelling the seasonal narrative and planting fun Easter eggs from previous outings. I laughed; I cried. I died inside when a particular couple disbanded. All in all, it’s entertaining as hell and a much-needed serotonin boost.

In honor of the show returning for a third and final (sobs) season, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite quotes from “Smells Like Mean Spirit.” Peruse at your peril.

KEELEY: Oh my. I did not know that. I’ve been saying “Corporate Flying Object” ’cause it’s been making me laugh.

Keeley (Juno Temple) has lunch with Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) at her new PR firm, KJPR. After her CFO, Barbara (Katy Wix), asks why she’s spending 200 pounds a week on flowers for the office, Keeley tries to conceal the fact she doesn’t know what “CFO” means, which Rebecca catches. Admittedly, “Corporate Flying Object” sounds much cooler than “Chief Financial Officer.” Keeley trusting the universe as her reason why she didn’t Google it is genuinely refreshing. We should all trust the universe (or whatever higher power we believe in).

Dani, Isaac, Sam and Colin chat in the locker room in Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 1, "Smells Like Mean Spirit."
Cristo Fernández, Kola Bokinni, Toheeb Jimoh and Billy Harris in TED LASSO, Season 3 Episode 1, “Smells Like Mean Spirit,” now streaming on Apple TV+.

DANI: Even that sweet little bear does not believe in us.

THIERRY: I think it’s probably other people writing for him.

DANI: Wait, what?

Dani Rojas’ (Cristo Fernández) world came crashing down when he learned that Paddington isn’t real. Thierry (Moe Jeudy-Lamour) doles out the hard-hitting truth, telling Dani that someone writes Paddington’s posts on Twitter. Also, you know it’s bad when Paddington, a symbol of unadulterated sweetness, doesn’t believe in you. Dani’s innocence is a balm for the soul. He’s sunshine in human form. I like to think he still believes in Santa.

TED: See, gentleman, right now, y’alls brains are basically London in 1857. They’re blocked up by other people’s dookie. Y’all need to make an internal sewer system within yourselves, and then connect to each other’s tunnels, help each other keep that flow.

It isn’t a Ted Lasso episode without our titular Midwestern coach’s (Jason Sudeikis) inspiring monologues. This time, he leans heavily into sewers and sh*t as a metaphor. When he talks about the Greyhounds constructing an “internal sewer system” within themselves, I wanted to remind him we have those. Biologically, you know. That said, it’s sound advice. If you’re part of a team, it’s essential to rely on them when needed. It’s a give-and-take relationship.

Phil Dunster in TED LASSO, Season 3 Episode 1, “Smells Like Mean Spirit,” now streaming on Apple TV+.

PHOEBE: One of my core beliefs is that nothing lasts forever.

Phoebe (Elodie Blomfield) is wise beyond her years. Case in point: her conversation with Keeley and Roy (Brett Goldstein) when she learns they’ve broken up. She brushes it off as perfectly acceptable — they only dated a year, after all. She’s adopted “nothing lasts forever” as one of her mantras. Oh, the wisdom and sagacity of the young. Of course, once Phoebe was in the car with Roy, she tore into him for ending his relationship with Keeley. I agree with Phoebe. It’s stupid. (Please excuse my swearing.)

JAMIE: Remember, it’s just poop-eh. Let it flow.

I could listen to Jamie (Phil Dunster) talk all day. Additionally, his character arc is one of my favorites on the show. Talk about well-written character development coupled with Dunster’s stellar performance. He’s taken on some of Ted’s speech patterns and mannerisms, and it’s damn delightful. His pronunciation of “poop-eh” now eclipses “bab-eh” in my book. Jamie’s right: you gotta let the criticism flow past you when poop-eh hits the fan.
