Welcome to Tavern Talk Thursday! This is a weekly column where we chat with a member of the TTRPG (tabletop role-playing game) community to learn more about how they found themselves at the table, what they love about tabletop gaming, and other fun things. Think of it as a little sneak peeks into the minds of our fellow players and DMs.
Good day, fellow adventurers. Check your weapons at the door and settle in for another fireside chat. This week we are chatting with the lead video editor for Homie and the Dude – Becky! She’s a wiz with Premier Pro and a lethal combination of creativity, speed and a sound-tracking genius. Becky spends her time bringing The Sky Realm to life alongside the other members of her team. Keep reading to find out what Becky loves about the TTRPG community!

Becky of Homie and the Dude
Julia Roth: Let’s chat your TTRPG backstory! How did you find yourself at the table?
Becky: I was invited to play in a family D&D game with Bodhi, Tom and a few other close friends. I joined as I had never played D&D before and thought it would be fun to play alongside some other new players.
JR: Favorite world to adventure in?
B: I have only played in 3 campaigns which have been a friend’s homebrew, Lost Mine of Phandelver and The Sky Realm. I’d have to say The Sky Realm is the best world I have adventured in. There is so much to do and see! The NPCs are awesome and fun to battle against.
JR: Favorite one-shot adventure?
B: I’d have to say the Honey Heist that I played with family around Christmas. It’s a great one-shot to play with people who are new to TTRPGs. It’s great fun for everyone, and you get to play and name your bear; how cool is that!!

JR: Backstory or class first?
B: I normally choose my class and flesh out my character first, as I can select my character traits and personality stuff before deciding on what sort of backstory my character would have.
JR: Favorite spell and why?
B: The characters I usually choose tend to be more fighting and strength than having spells. Although not really a spell, it’s a cantrip. My favorite would be sacred flame. Sacred flame is one I used a lot during my first campaign, and brought down many of my enemies very quickly.
JR: Who has been your favorite character to play?
B: My favorite character to play so far is probably my current character in The Sky Realm. My character is a Tiefling, and my class is a Psionic warrior! This is my favorite as I get to use Psionic strike and Telekinetic movement. These are so cool and badass, and means I get to propel weapons and move things around.

JR: Do you have a particular race/class you enjoy?
B: My favorite class I also probably my most played class! A Tiefling! I enjoy playing a Tiefling not only because they look cool and edgy but also because Tieflings are great if you want to maximize your character.
JR: Is there something that you build into every character? A fun trait or a special item?
B: In the few games I have played, each character is different. There is nothing I have built into every character. Perhaps this is something I’ll look into in the future!
JR: What is your favorite system to play within?
B: All of the games I have played have been within 5e, so I’d have to say that is my favorite (so far).
JR: Tell us about the wildest adventure you have been on?
B: The wildest adventure I have been on was in The Sky Realm.

JR: What has been your most impactful moment at a table?
B: My most impact moment at the table has been during the family Sky Realm game. We were in a huge fight with lots of enemies and baddies when a bone dragon appeared! I remembered that I had a magic bottle that we used on our ship to transport it around. I pulled it out and opened it up in front of the bone dragon, and BAM, he was instantly sucked in. I believe my tiefling is still carrying it around to this day!
JR: Favorite dice to use?
B: I would have to say the set my friend got me for Secret Santa last year. They’re just clear resin dice, but they each contain a little frog inside!
JR: Would you rather face off against an entire dungeon of undead or charm your way through a royal court?
B: Wow, this is tough! I’d have to say face off against an entire dungeon of undead! Im much better at fighting than I am at charming and persuading people!

JR: Favorite TTRPG Monster?
B: I haven’t encountered many, but during the games I have played, I’d have to say I really enjoy fighting the bugabear. It was the first creature I fought, so feels nostalgic for me.
JR: Good luck charms or rituals before a game?
B: I don’t have any currently.
JR: Who is sitting at your dream table?
B: Jack Black (he’d be the DM !!!), Seth Green, Matthew Lillard, Jamie Lee Curtis and Winona Ryder!
JR: What are you most looking forward to within the TTRPG world?
B: The thing I am looking forward to the most within the TTRPG world is, of course, the official release of our book SKY ZEPHYRS! It’s a combat Overlay for DnD 5e!!!
