Star Wars: The Force Awakens is stunning. Every shot captured could be a stand alone piece of art, in large part because of the locations team and J.J. Abrams wanting everything about the movie to feel real and practical. Filming took place in Abu Dhabi, Iceland, Scotland and Skellig Michael, Ireland, the place where Rey finds Luke. The emotional gravity of that moment was only enhanced by the grandeur of Skellig Michael and now J.J. Abrams and team and Discover Ireland have released this behind-the-scenes look.
Skellig Michael, the larger of the two Skellig islands, was the location for a Christian monastery that was founded sometime between the 6th and 8th century, but abandoned in the 12th century. It is now A UNESCO World Heritage site. The fact that the island was home to a monastery was something that was very important for J.J. Abrams, who wanted to find someplace that would represent the sacredness of a Jedi temple.
I’m sure we’ll see more of Skellig Michael in Star Wars: Episode VIII, since they were reported to have been shooting there in September.
Star Wars: Episode VIII will premiere May, 2017.
