Taika Waititi Takes Helm of FLASH GORDON Animated Film

The man, the myth, the legend Taika Waititi has a brand new project in the works. According to Deadline, Waititi is set to direct and write an animated version of Flash Gordon. The epic space opera that influenced Star Wars has been adapted multiple times with the last film being in 1980.

Flash Gordon‘s origin started in 1934 as a science fiction comic strip created by Alex Raymond. A foreign planet, known as Mongo, is set on a crash course for Earth. The titular hero is kidnapped by a mad scientist and brought to the planet to stop the collision and the planet’s ruthless leader, Ming the Merciless. The comic strip ran daily from 1934 to 1992 and has been adapted in various forms of media, including films, television, and animated series.

Waititi will take a crack at the latest adaptation, which has passed multiple hands already. Directors’ Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman) and Julius Avery (Overlord) were the latest to be attached to the project that has been several years in the making. With Waititi on fire since Thor: Ragnarok, it’s no wonder Fox/Disney asked him to come aboard. The only other news about project that we know is that John Davis is currently connected to produce. This could be really exciting!
