I was very excited when Syfy announced it was bringing Arthur C. Clarke’s science fiction novel, Childhood’s End about an alien invasion that did NOT involve guns and explosions to television. The book is more of a ‘mess with your mind’ thriller and thinker.

Childhood’s End follows the peaceful alien invasion of Earth by the mysterious “Overlords,” whose arrival begins decades of apparent utopia under indirect alien rule, at the cost of human identity and culture.

The novel begins during the nuclear arms race between the U.S and Soviet Union and I have been very curious to see if they were going to bring the story up to date or do a period show. This teaser makes me think that the screenplay has been modernized which can work well since, here and now in 2015, we are still wonderfully at war and screwing up the planet. They’ve also changed some of the character’s vocations for the television event, but still, it can work since the theme of the original piece is so strong.

Most exciting about the teaser is of course, Charles Dance who plays the most evil of Lannisters, Lord Tywin, in Game of Thrones. He will be the main “Overlord” in the series who is named Karellen. Karellen is the Supervisor of Earth and the only Overlord to whom humans can communicate with. Humanity never sees Karellen’s or any other Overlord face which makes Dance’s casting all the better. He has the perfect voice: calm, smart, somewhat sinister, somewhat soothing and wonderfully mysterious.

Let’s all cross our fingers for this one. The material is there and Syfy has assembled a good group of folks to bring it to the screen: Akiva Goldsman (Lone Survivor, A Beautiful Mind, I Am Legend) and Mike De Luca (Captain Philips, Moneyball, The Social Network) are attached as executive producers. Childhood’s End will be adapted by Matthew Graham (creator of BBC’s Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes).

In addition to Childhood’s End, Syfy has a grand slate of shows coming our way and I couldn’t be more excited
