Game of Thrones season 7 is only about a month away. But, in the meantime, George R.R. Martin fans can celebrate another of his creations coming to TV. Syfy has ordered a pilot for Martin’s supernatural space thriller, Nightflyers.

According to Deadline, the pilot was written by Jeff Buhler (Jacob’s Ladder) and writers are being hired in preparation for a possible series pickup.  Nightflyers takes place on ‘the eve of Earth’s destruction’.  I haven’t personally read the book or seen the 1987 movie adaptation starring Catherine Mary Stewart (The Last Starfighter, Weekend at Bernie’s) but you can bet I’m going to check them out. Let’s face it, you can pretty much hook me any time with, ‘it takes place on the eve of Earth’s destruction.’ Yep. I’m in.

Here’s a short synopsis of Nightflyers. “In the hope of making contact with alien life, eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath embark on an expedition to the edge of our solar system aboard the Nightflyer, a ship with a small, tightknit crew and a reclusive captain. But when terrifying and violent events begin to take place, they start to question one another — and surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought.”

George R.R. Martin is reportedly not involved with this project, or his other property, Wild Cards, that was also optioned by Syfy. He’s under an exclusive contract with HBO. They’re smart over there at HBO.

There are no dates set for Nightflyers as of yet. Stay tuned.
