This weekend at Star Wars Celebration 2019, we got our first look at Respawn Entertainment and EA‘s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the latest video game in the Star Wars franchise.
Since the game’s announcement at E3 2018, the gameplay has been heavily speculated: Will it be an Online Multiplayer? Would there be a Story Mode or even a Storyline? Then, on April 12th, it was confirmed over Twitter that the title would, in fact, be a Single-Player Story-based Game. And finally, during the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Panel at Star Wars Celebration 2019, we got a glimpse of what that story actually is.
Trailer
In the Story Trailer we get to see our protagonist of the game, Cal Kestis. Cal is a young Padawan on the run from the Empire and Inquisition after the execution of Order 66. We see him working as a Scraper, trying his best to lie low. But unfortunately, he makes himself known and then is hunted by the Inquisition and more specifically, the Second Sister (sibling of the Seventh Sister from Star Wars: Rebels). Our journey as Cal will take us to unexplored places within the Star Wars Universe. “There will be a lot of new characters AND new planets to explore” noted Blair Brown, Producer of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. One character, in particular, is Cere, a former Jedi-Knight seen in the ship alongside Cal in the trailer.
And with new worlds and characters comes new Troopers. The Purge Troopers are the menacing melee foes we get a glimpse of in the trailer. They are the Empire’s forces sent to investigate the locations of possible Jedi, and ultimately call in the Inquisitors to finish the job. Purge Troopers wield unique melee weapons that will make for a matched battle when fighting with a Lightsaber. And speaking of fighting with a Lightsaber, let’s go ahead and explore some of the gameplay that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will offer.
Gameplay
While there isn’t any gameplay shown, Game Director Stig Asmussen stated that the trailer features “all gameplay assets that you will find in the game”. We can clearly see Cal wall running (a trademark Respawn game ability), manipulating the world around him using The Force, and yes, even wielding a Lightsaber. Since a lot of Cal’s abilities appear to be Force and Melee based, it will be crucial to identify and exploit the weaknesses of your enemies. But you’re not journeying alone in this galaxy far far away. Cal will be joined by the adorable droid, BD-1. BD-1 has a lot of abilities (one of which is being a flashlight) that will aid you on your journey. Moreover, you’ll be able to level up the Droid and expand its skills (most likely in a Skill-Tree) over the course of the game.
Little was said about the Lightsaber shown in the video; however, what WAS revealed is that “over the course of the game, it [the lightsaber] will grow and evolve, and in many respects, it is a reflection of Cal” (Stig Asmussen). That’s right. An EVOLVING Lightsaber. My guess is that along with the (speculated) Skill Tree for BD-1, your Lightsaber will ALSO have a Skill Tree. Will there be the ability to customize the Lightsaber to fit with each player’s gameplay style? We’ll have to wait and see!
Overall
From the story trailer alone, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order looks like a carefully crafted and incredible game. We’ll most likely get gameplay footage at E3 2019, along with more information about the world, and other characters in the game! And with a title like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, can we expect even MORE Star Wars Jedi titles in the future? One can only hope! But for now, all of us at Geek Girl Authority are excited to join Cal on his adventure on November 15th!
Star Wars Jedi: The Fallen Order will be available on November 15th, 2019 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
