SWAMP THING Finally Casts Its Titular (Anti)Hero

The time has finally come! The DC Universe show, Swamp Thing, has finally cast its titular character. But there’s a bit of a twist. Swamp Thing will not be played by just one actor, it’ll take two to bring the bayou behemoth to life. This news coming a day after Will Patton had been announced as an antagonist for the series.

Created by the late Len Wein and Bernie Wrightston in 1972, Dr. Alec Holland became the creature Swamp Thing after an experiment gone terribly wrong. Since his initial run, the character has been through many writers hands and a few iterations, though his peak of popularity came in the 1970s and 1990s. This actually won’t be the first TV series based on the character. In fact, there was a TV series in the 90s and two films in addition to appearances in many animated films.

According to Deadline, actor Andy Bean (Powers, It: Chapter II) will be portraying Dr. Alec Holland while Derek Mears (Friday the 13th, Sleepy Hollow) will be playing the monster. It’s unclear whether Mears will be wearing practical effects costume or portraying a purely CGI character, but it’s exciting to know we have the main character cast. While it’s also unclear just how long Bean will be in the show, the synopsis gives us a hint that it won’t be very long.

“Holland (Bean) is caught in the cross-hairs when he discovers the mystery may connected to his work in the swamp. That leads him into conflict with dark forces, from which he emerges as the elemental hero known as Swamp Thing. As the monster (Mears) struggles to hold onto his humanity, he must embrace what he has become in order to defend the town as well as the natural world at large.”

Frankly, I’m most looking forward to the effects. I’m really intrigued to see how they can pull this character off without being hokey. And though the show is called Swamp Thing, there’s no guarantee he’s in every episode. The show is said to focus on Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed) and her discoveries in the swamp. It would be blasphemy if they didn’t include him in every episode, yes, but they’d be able to go full out on the costume if the budget isn’t dedicated to it every episode. We’ll have to wait and see.
