The Swamp Thing cast continues to fill out! According to Deadline, the DC Universe show has found it’s main antagonist in Will Patton. If lead character Abby Arcane cares for the environment then this character would rather watch the swamps drain. That’s right, villain Avery Sunderland has joined the show.

In the comics set in New Earth, Avery Carlton Sunderland was a CEO of Sunderland Corporation, a scientific research firm. When working closely to Alec Holland and his wife Linda, an accident claimed their lives and Sunderland is immediately intrigued. After discovering the abilities the pair possessed, he immediately being doing research on them. First on Alec’s deceased wife Linda and the effects the experiment had on her body. Once he figured out Alec became the monster known as Swamp Thing, he wanted to know more and brought him in for experiments as well. Things didn’t turn out as well for him in the end, however.

The show seems to keep Sunderland’s character similar, though potentially making him more personable. Per his description, he “serves as the de facto patriarch of his Louisiana hometown, always giving back to the community.  His benevolent veneer, however, masks a ruthless determination to harness the power of the swamp for profit.” It’s always about power with villains, isn’t it? How he plans to harness that power, it’s not made clear. The show is said to follow Arcane as she discovers the “mystical and terrifying secrets” of the swamp with unimaginable horrors emerging from it. Will Sunderland attempt to control those horror? Maybe control the Swamp Thing personally? We’ll have to see when it comes out next year.
