Susan and Luke stand outside a house during a sunny day while looking through a window on SurrealEstate Season 3 Episode 2, "Night Terrors."

SurrealEstate Season 3 Episode 2, “Night Terrors,” expands on the new arc regarding Luke’s spirited nemesis, providing more context regarding this entity’s quest for vengeance. Auggie loses his job and will undoubtedly return to the Roman Ireland Agency (yay). Lastly, and this is addressed to my fellow Millennials, we get a mini Instant Star reunion with Kristopher Turner as this week’s guest star. Jamie Andrews and Tommy Q are in the house! It’s a fun episode with delightfully cheesy special effects reminiscent of ’90s sci-fi/horror.

We open with Mitch (Turner) and Jaylen (David Webster) Valmy having dinner in their home. We learn that the father-son duo is about to embark on a big move. Jaylen asks to spend the night with his best friend and attend a going-away party in his honor. Mitch rejects this, though, citing that they have rules for a reason.

That evening, Mitch embraces his son, hoping to mend fences between them. He shuts the door to Jaylen’s room and bolts it several times. That seems excessive — teenage boys aren’t that scary.

Auggie searches through the archives at ASDRA. He holds a special weapon on SurrealEstate Season 3 Episode 2, "Night Terrors."

Squeaky Clean

Later, Rochelle (Joy Tanner) finds Auggie (Maurice Dean Wint) tinkering away on his latest creation. Rochelle informs him that she’s getting promoted to executive director at ASDRA. This means she can’t have any skeletons in her closet. Her ledger must be squeaky clean. Auggie is already under fire for breaking his non-compete by assisting Luke. Auggie vows to keep a lid on his continued partnership with Luke to protect Rochelle.

Then, Mitch hires the Roman Ireland Agency to sell his house. Susan (Sarah Levy) takes a tour of said house. We learn that Mitch’s wife passed away some time ago. Mitch is ready to move on. Susan notices the locks and bolts on Jaylen’s bedroom door. She inquires about this. Mitch claims that Jaylen sleepwalks. One night, he wound up in the middle of the road. It’s for his safety.

While Mitch is on the phone with the movers, Susan scopes out Jaylen’s room despite Mitch trying to keep her out. She notices iron bars on the bedroom windows. That’s not terrifying at all. Mitch finds her snooping and gives her the boot, but not before encouraging her to take the first offer she gets for the house.

Vengeance Passed Down

Next, Luke (Tim Rozon) chats with Audrey (Daniella Dela Peña), the agency’s new administrative assistant. She’s the new Zooey. Audrey seems leagues better than Brandon. Luke receives a call from Tyler (R. Austin Ball), the rich dude inhabited by a malevolent spirit hellbent on exacting revenge against Luke’s dad. Well, now Luke will have to absorb whatever Tyler doles out. Tyler tells Luke he wishes to sell his lavish home. Luke is thrilled because this house is prime real estate — it’s a massive get for the agency. Luke offers to stop by to check out the house.

Later, Mitch stands outside Jaylen’s door and listens in horror as what sounds like a demon rages within. Jaylen is clearly possessed.

Then, Susan meets Audrey, who still doesn’t quite know what this agency specializes in. Susan puts Audrey to work. She must understand Susan’s intricate filing system. Susan tells Luke about Mitch’s peculiar behavior, especially his cagey demeanor regarding his son. Also, accepting the first offer is ludicrous.

Backstory

Susan and Luke discover Mitch in the former’s office. He apologizes for the other day. Mitch explains that his wife died in a car accident. Then, shortly after that, Jaylen got very sick. His doctors didn’t think he’d make it. However, he pulled through. A few months ago, Jaylen started sleepwalking. Mitch chalks it up to Jaylen’s grief manifesting physically. Susan persuades Mitch to let her field more offers for the house. He deserves to get the most out of his home.

Meanwhile, Tyler toys with a man who tries to invite him to a local church event. Tyler is very anti-church and not religious. He offers to pay this man gobs of cash to leave the church. The man storms off, unwilling to compromise on his faith.

Elsewhere, in The Tell-Tale Heart, Auggie tells Luke that he can’t contribute his supernatural devices to the agency anymore. ASDRA is on his ass about it and he must keep clean for Rochelle’s sake. Luke is disappointed, but he understands. That said, he misses Auggie, Zooey and Phil. He longs for how things used to be.

In the Room Where It Happens

That night, Jaylen stays with his friend against his dad’s wishes. While outside, said friend calls for Jaylen, who’s going through it inside. Suddenly, a creature grabs Jaylen’s friend. This is, presumably, a possessed Jaylen.

Next, Luke meets Tyler. Tyler tries to act like he doesn’t know Luke, even though the spirit within him does. Luke wonders why Tyler would sell this perfect house. Tyler offers vague answers before putting the spotlight on Luke. He wants to get to know him. Luke is visibly uncomfortable. Susan calls him, claiming it’s an emergency, so Luke heads for the door. He vows to return another day so they can get the ball rolling on this sale.

Tyler, a white man, grins while standing on the doorstep of his lavish home. He wears an off-white sweater with a blonde beard and slicked back blonde hair.

Tyler brandishes a knife while standing behind Luke and prepares to stab him in the back when the church dude from earlier returns. After Luke leaves, the church guy declares he accepts Tyler’s generous cash donation to quit the church. However, Tyler claims the offer has expired. Ouch.

What Is Jaylen?

Then, Susan shows Luke the iron bars on the window to Jaylen’s room. Said bars are bent out of shape. Who — or what — could do that? They spot Mitch escorting Jaylen home. The latter has a blanket around his shoulders. Susan tries to ask what happened, but Luke urges her to leave the pair be for now.

After this, Audrey shares her research on Mitch with Luke and Susan. Audrey admits that her former employer never dug into clients’ pasts. Anyway, Mitch used to be a commercial pilot until his Jaylen got sick. Now, he’s a talented day trader. That’s quite the career pivot.

Luke tells Susan that he sensed something from the Valmy house. Regardless, Mitch and Jaylen are in danger. Lomax is at a conference, so they’re short-staffed. Audrey tries to accompany Luke and Susan as they leave, but they order her to stay put. Those files won’t file themselves.

The Demon in Me

At the same time, Jaylen watches the footage he recorded of himself sleeping. He looks horrified. Luke and Susan inform Mitch that there’s something old and evil inside his son. Mitch tries to shoo them away, but Jaylen interrupts, asking his father about what’s happening to him.

Mitch finally comes clean. He knows there’s a demon inside Jaylen because he put it there. Plot twist! Jaylen was diagnosed with lymphoma, and his prognosis was very poor. Mitch searched high and low for a cure, even traveling the world. He wound up in Northern Iraq. A man there claimed he could cure Jaylen’s cancer. Mitch threw tons of money at him.

The man gave Mitch what looks like a vase. He doesn’t realize until it’s too late that this cure is actually a demon. When Jaylen absorbs said demon, though, his cancer goes into remission. The demon remained dormant for years until a few months ago. He only surfaces at night.

Mitch worries that exorcising the demon might ensure the lymphoma returns. Jaylen insists he’s old enough to make a decision about his life. He wants the demon out. Luke reassures Mitch that they’re equipped to fix this.

A Theft

Later, Susan and Luke chat with Auggie, who admits he might have a solution. A glutton for punishment, our Auggie. He infiltrates ASDRA’s archives and steals a special defibrillator. He even evades the metal detector and security guard with it.

Auggie reunites with our duo at the agency. He explains that this defibrillator can keep a soldier alive for days if immediate medical care isn’t possible. He rigged it to emit a charge that would shock the demon out of Jaylen without killing him. However, nobody should be near Jaylen when they deploy the defibrillator. Our trio surmises the demon awoke because Jaylen is going through puberty. Those pesky hormones.

Auggie accompanies Luke and Susan so he can use the device. Audrey finally gets to tag along, too. Meanwhile, the father of Jaylen’s friend reveals that his son is in the hospital, no thanks to Jaylen. The man is furious. He threatens to call the police. Mitch grabs Jaylen and urges him to pack a bag. They have to run.

He’s Awake

While on the road, Jaylen struggles to stay awake. Of course, the demon only emerges when Jaylen is asleep. Mitch urges his son not to sleep. Unfortunately, the call of slumber is too strong. The demon surfaces. Mitch pulls off the road as the demon attacks him. Then, Demon Jaylen barrels into the woods.

Luke, Susan, Auggie and Audrey park behind him. Luke and Susan order Audrey to stay with Mitch and call 911. Susan, Luke and Auggie chase Demon Jaylen down. Susan uses her telekinesis to push him onto the ground while Luke and Auggie attempt to subdue him.

When that doesn’t pan out, Mitch arrives to help, with Audrey hot on his heels. She passes out upon seeing Demon Jaylen. Mitch speaks to his son, who’s still in there. He embraces Jaylen while surreptitiously setting up the special defibrillator and detonating the charge. Luke, Susan and Auggie discourage this, reminding him he might die if the defibrillator emits that charge while he’s in close proximity to Jaylen. Mitch takes that risk for his son.

A Firing and a Visit

After this, Auggie confesses his crime to Rochelle. He promises to return the defibrillator to ASDRA. Rochelle fires him. What does this mean for them living together?

Later, Susan visits Mitch, who miraculously survived that ordeal. Jaylen is doing well, as is his friend. He plans to stay put, too. Then, Susan receives an email of resignation from Audrey. She’d rather take her talents to an agency that’s less invasive (and supernatural). So, they need a new Zooey (again).

Luke isn’t worried, though. They have Tyler’s listing, which is a significant boon for the agency. He puts up a “For Sale” sign outside Tyler’s house.

Grave Threats

Speaking of Tyler, he visits Carl Roman’s grave. We learn that the malevolent spirit within him used to reside in Elvis the Elephant. However, 35 years ago, Carl and a young Luke locked Elvis inside that safebox and buried him in the river.

Tyler vows to make Luke pay. He hopes Luke will wish he was in Carl’s place — getting feasted on by worms.

Evil dude’s gonna be evil.
