DISCLAIMER: This recap of SurrealEstate Season 2 Episode 6, “Set Your Flag on Fire,” contains spoilers. Proceed at your peril.

Sometimes, all it takes is a century-old Hatfields and McCoys-esque curse to set two neighboring families on edge. Thankfully, The Roman Agency is here to vanquish it. “Set Your Flag on Fire” is a fun SurrealEstate outing that doesn’t do much to push the overarching seasonal narrative forward. (Well, save Zooey’s decision to step away from being an agent.) However, it gives us more Phil and a better glimpse into his family life. That, my friends, isn’t a bad thing. I’m glad we’re exploring more of our main characters’ rich inner lives in Season 2.

“Set Your Flag on Fire” strikes a nice balance between campy, over-the-top supernatural fare and more grounded, character-driven drama. Neither feels overpowering; they work well together. Side note: Zooey and August are the adorable father/daughter pairing I didn’t know I needed. I love them.

Ready to delve into “Set Your Flag on Fire”? Let’s get to it.

We open with Rowan Massey (Tony Nappo) walking through his neighbor’s yard at night. He posts a sign that says “Trim your damn hedges!” in red, using a knife to secure it to said neighbor’s door. Then, Luke (Tim Rozon) meets with his new clients, the Hasans. Tariq (Nabeel El Khafif) and Mina (Elisa Moolecherry) want to sell their house because of their neighbors, the Masseys. Tariq and Mina’s daughter, Daria (Reine Faiad), broaches the subject to Luke, who decides to visit the Masseys with a delectable muffin basket. There’s nothing a good muffin basket can’t remedy.

While Luke’s outside, he meets Renata Massey (Geneviève Steele), who greets him cheerfully. At The Roman Agency, Luke lays out the Hasan/Massey case to Zooey (Savannah Basley), August (Maurice Dean Wint) and Phil (Adam Korson). So far, everything looks positively normal — no supernatural or paranormal influences to be found. Later, Luke returns to the Hasans’ house to discover a headless bird on their front porch, courtesy of the Masseys. Luke witnesses the unadulterated aggression between the two families firsthand when the Masseys and Hasans taunt each other. Luke urges his clients to return to their home as the Masseys’ dog chases them.

After that altercation almost turned bloody, Luke sits down with the Masseys. They claim the Hasans started it with the inexplicable hostility. So far, both families point fingers at the other as the initiator. Elsewhere, Auggie asks Zooey why she wants to close the book on her real estate agent career. She’s just started! Zooey believes it simply isn’t for her. Who wouldn’t want to be Rita Weiss’ best friend, though? Anyway, Zooey’s true calling is out there, waiting for her.

Next, Abigail (Natalie Brown) waltzes into the agency. She’s looking for “Philly,” aka Phil. Zooey isn’t having any of her ‘tude right off the bat. I don’t blame her. We learn Abigail is Phil’s sister. Abigail hands Phil some documents and asks him to have dinner with her the following night. He can bring Anthony, too. After that conversation, Phil calls Luke, who asks him to dive into records of who resided in both houses before the Hasans and the Masseys.

Then, Luke reunites his clients and begs them to play nice with the Masseys. They don’t have to be BFFs, but both parties must be civil if they’re to sell the house. Once they head outside, they notice the Masseys are also selling their home — and Rita Weiss is their agent. Oh, competition!

Later, Phil chats with someone who formerly lived next to the Masseys. Initially, the man claims they bickered over trivial neighbor stuff. However, he quickly recalls that the Masseys fed his cat anti-freeze, killing the poor baby. That’s monstrous. Meanwhile, Luke reunites with everyone’s favorite real estate agent, Rita Weiss (Alison Brooks). Will she behave? Probably not. But will she have some killer one-liners and zingers? Hell yes.

While everyone’s outside, Luke and Rita witness a nasty argument between the Hasans and Masseys. It’s brutal. It almost comes to blows. Thankfully, the agents break it up before it gets physically violent. Luke insists he and Rita work together to ensure these folks don’t kill each other. Rita shrugs it off, chalking it up to normal neighborly friction. Okay, lady.

Next, Phil chats with his hubby Anthony (Paul Ewan Wilson), who asks him what’s eating him. Phil reveals that his and Abigail’s parents left them land that was omitted from their will. They want said land to go to the church. As we know, Phil harbors a complex relationship with the church. Abigail dropped off those papers to force him to sign it over. Phil knows her tactics and isn’t pleased. He’d rather tell her “Hell no” and be done with it. Anthony is a supportive husband who also cracks the occasional joke. I like him.

Later, Zooey joins Luke at a neighborhood block party, where the Masseys offer face painting for the kids and the Hasans make lemonade for everyone. Rita is also there. She provided the bouncy castle! Zooey chats with Rita’s assistant, Alvin (Michael Rhodri-Smith), whose undoubtedly thankless role deserves a medal of valor. Alvin resumes his post as Protector of the Bouncy Castle while the Masseys attack the Hasans, resulting in an all-out brawl between Tariq and Rowan. Mina and Renata also battle it out.

Unfortunately, Tariq and Rowan pull out the knives and other sharp instruments, stabbing each other in the shoulders and legs. Even worse, Alvin becomes collateral damage as he’s inadvertently stabbed during their fight. Once the ambulance takes Alvin away (thankfully, he’s alive), Luke urges Rita to work with him to get to the bottom of the Hasan/Massey feud. That means that The Roman Agency needs access to the Massey home. Rita reluctantly goes along with it.

Next, we see Daria chatting with Auggie as he surveys the Hasan home. He appears to side with her regarding the conflict. Meanwhile, Zooey moves furniture for Rita in the Massey house. What fun. Elsewhere, Phil has dinner with Abigail. Things take a turn for the argumentative when Phil puts his foot down, insisting he won’t sign off on giving the family land to the church. Abigail reminds him that it’s what their parents wanted. Phil claims Abigail was always their parents’ favorite.

However, Abigail retorts that he was their favorite. Despite leaving the priesthood and marrying Anthony, they still favored him over the other kids. Even though Abigail asserts she loves Anthony, why does this sound vaguely homophobic? As if Phil did something wrong by marrying a man he loves? Anyway, Abigail states that Phil wins and storms out.

Next, Zooey learns from Renata that the Hasans love to blast show tunes and ’80s theme songs at 2 a.m. Like Auggie with the Hasans, Zooey appears to be Team Massey. This culminates in Zooey and Auggie fighting once they step outside. During their argument, Auggie lets slip that Zooey wants to step away from being a real estate agent. He also pours salt in the wound by mentioning that she doesn’t have a father. Zooey rightfully slaps him.

Thankfully, this breaks the “spell” over them. They immediately embrace and apologize to each other profusely. Auggie mentions that Zooey means the world to him. I’ve always sensed a father/daughter bond between them. This warms my heart. I love their relationship. Anyway, sensing something potentially supernatural is at play, Luke asks Phil to do more digging. Meanwhile, the Hasans and Masseys prepare for war. Both families are armed with weaponry. The Masseys even bring lit torches to the battlefield.

Phil races to their houses. He reveals that two families once resided next to each other a century ago, their properties lying along the same border where the fence between the Hasans and Masseys is. One day, one of the families housed a cow that strayed from the other property. If you recall, the Hasans and Masseys fought over a cow earlier in the episode. Anyway, an altercation broke out, morphing into a physical fight. It ended with everyone dead. Their blood flowed into the fence post holes, where it magically influences whoever lives on either side of that fence to this day.

Upon hearing this story, Luke takes an ax and destroys the fence. Everyone else joins him. This seems to break the curse. The Hasans and Masseys grin at each other. All is well! Later, at the agency, Abigail drops by to apologize. She reassures Phil that it’s his decision regarding the land. Whatever he wants. They hug it out.

Then, Luke visits the Hasans and Masseys, who are planting flowers where the fence once stood. Everyone’s smiling and gleeful. Well, everyone except Rita Weiss. Her lines in this scene killed me, especially about Alvin almost “bouncing to heaven” and that dying affects your credit score. Of course, she’s irritated that neither family wants to sell their house now.

Meanwhile, Phil informs Anthony that he signed the paperwork — his parents’ land now belongs to the church, as per their wishes. Pick your battles, right? Anthony reveals he hasn’t heard anything from the adoption agency yet. Phil reassures his hubby that they’re a family no matter what. Some folks don’t even have what they have. Phil embraces Anthony. It’s so frickin’ sweet.

At The Roman Agency, Luke asks Zooey if she really wants to quit being an agent. Even though she’s good at it, Zooey intends to find her true passion. After that convo, Luke retreats to his office to try calling Susan. It goes straight to voicemail. The message sounds too cheesy to be her. He says aloud what we’ve all been thinking: they need Susan. In a rage, he smashes a drinking glass.

When will they realize that Susan is not okay? Will our favorite couple — Phil and Anthony — get to adopt a kid soon? What will Zooey decide to do as a career? Only time (and more episodes) will tell.
