The world has changed for the Winchesters on Supernatural. Dean (Jensen Ackles) has disappeared. He’s still alive, that much we know. Dean had to make a risky deal with Michael (Christian Keyes). For one time only, Michael had control of Dean’s body to face Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino). They stabbed Lucifer’s vessel with the Archangel blade and Lucifer died. But then Michael when back on his word and took full control of Dean.
Sam (Jared Padalecki), Mary (Samantha Smith), Castiel (Misha Collins) and the rest of the family have been looking for him ever since. Even if they find him, can they save Dean? Or will they need to kill Dean to defeat Michael. And what is Michael up to? Does he want to wipe humanity off the planet? Or is he just looking for a place in this world? For now Michael is a “Stranger in a Strange Land.”
After a brief recap of season 13, the episode opens with a very unfamiliar scene. Sam is driving Baby alone. He’s got a nice beard growing and the anguish of losing Dean is still on his face. It’s obvious he misses his big brother.
Dean, or actually, Michael in Dean’s body walks around freely. He visits a Muslim man while he prays. He interrupts the man to ask him a simple question. What does the man want? The man answer that he wants peace and love. Michael is amused. If the man wanted peace, he wouldn’t have left Syria. And if he cared about love, he wouldn’t have cheated on his wife. Michael decides that humans aren’t worth saving. As for what Michael, he wants what he always wanted…a better world.
Mary is at the bunker, the hunters HQ. She has a lot of people helping them stock up on weapons to fight demons and other monsters. Maggie (Katherine Evans) helps to take care of the wounded. Sam arrives from his trip to Atlanta. His lead didn’t pan out. He was looking for Michael, but didn’t find anything. Mary assures him that they will find Dean. Ketch (David Haydn-Jones) is working in London. Cas is in Detroit. A month has passed and still no sign of Dean. Sam isn’t feeling very good about their chances of finding him.
One of the hunters tells Sam they have vampires head their way. He sets up teams of two out every 50 miles. He sits down to eat and continues working. Mary is worried about him, but he assures her that he’s good. Meanwhile, Jack (Alexander Calvert) is boxing with Bobby (Jim Beaver). Since losing his grace, Jack needs to learn how to fight. The training isn’t going well because Jack doesn’t like fighting. bobby says it wasn’t easy for either. He has been beaten up a lot. It’s not about how hard you can hit. It’s being able to get up when you are hit and keep moving.
Sister Jo (Danneel Ackles) is conducting one of her healing services. After thanking everyone for coming, she closes up. On her way home, Dean approaches her, calling her by name. But Jo doesn’t see Dean…she sees an angel. She sees Michael. She asks why Dean would say yes to this Michael. Michael calls it love. Jo says okay and is ready to leave. Michael needs to ask her one question. What does she want? She jokes and says she wants Chanel, Dior, He doesn’t like her answer because it’s a lie.
Michael knows all about her from Dean’s memories. She’s a rebel. The angel who doesn’t like playing by Heaven’s rules. Those pretty things don’t make her happy. He knows she wants to belong somewhere, love a home and a family. Michael is disappointed in her answer is so human. He can sense there aren’t many angels left, so he thought he could help them. But if they are like Jo, then maybe the angels aren’t worth saving either.
Sam checks in on Jack and how he’s dealing with being human. Jack says he’s okay, but Sam knows it’s hard. He knows Jack can get past it. He has faith in Jack. Mary interrupts to let him know that ‘he’ is awake. Sam promises to talk to Jack later and leaves the room.
Sam asks Mary if she talked to him. Mary says she can’t even look at him. Sam takes a deep breath and goes into the room. “He” is Nick (Pellegrino)…the vessel that Lucifer inhabited all these years. Somehow…some way, Nick survived the Angel Blade, but Lucifer is gone. Sam dresses his wound where he was stabbed and says it’s getting better. Sam asks if he remembers anything about Michael. Nick doesn’t remember much, but he does remember Michael saying ‘this time he will do it right.’ Not sure what that means, so Sam tells Nick to get some rest.
Sam gets a phone call from the demon who took Cas. He tells Sam that if he wants to see his angel alive again, then they need to chat. Sam gets the gang together to rescue Cas. Mary says it’s a trap, but they have to get Cas back. Maggie goes with Bobby. Jack wants to go too, but Bobby is worried that he’s not ready. Sam allows it saying Jack needs to feel useful.
The Demon offers Cas a cup of coffee and tries to make small talk. Cas asks why the demon is using him as bait. The Demon says he needs something from Sam. Recently he had a revelation. Someone asked him what he wanted. He didn’t know. So he sat and thought about it. He realized that he wants everything.
Mary rides with Sam to the meeting spot. She reassures Sam that everything will be fine, but Sam tells her to stop saying that. They don’t know if they will find Dean, if they will save Cas, they don’t know anything for sure. She knows Dean is out there scared and alone. And he might never come back, but she has to think about the good. If she doesn’t she will drown in the bad. And for Dean’s sake, they can’t drown.
Bobby tries to prepare Jack for what the fight they are walking into. He says whatever happens, Bobby has Jack’s back. They arrive at the location the next morning. Sam gives his demon blade to Mary, saying the demons will search him. He goes in alone to meet with the demon.
The demon is in awe of Sam, saying he’s an icon; his Beyonce. Sam checks on Cas, who is more embarrassed than hurt by the situation. Sam is ready to get down to business, but the other minion demons find Jack and Maggie outside the bar. The demon told Sam to come alone. That changes the deal.
This demon wants to be the new King of Hell in exchange for Cas, Jack and Maggie’s lives. He wants the Crowley deal. He gives Sam information and Sam looks the other way when demons make Crossroads dealings. Sam says they never gave Crowley that deal. The demon gets frustrated and starts talking about how ruthless he could be to Sam and his people. But a King has an image to uphold. He suggests that Sam take his deal before he has to show them who he really is.
Sam says no. The demon promises that he knows things, but so does Sam. Like the fact that Bobby and Mary are just outside the door with guns. They buts into the bar and start shooting. Jack grabs Maggie and they take cover by the bar. The demons run at Bobby and Mary to stop them from shooting. Mary throws the demon blade to Sam and he goes after the head honcho demon.
The demons get the upper hand when they reach Bobby, knocking down. Jack leaves Maggie to help him and gets beat down too. Mary gives Maggie an angel blade. A demon pounces on Mary when she tries to help Bobby. And Cas watches the demon overpower Sam. Maggie is able to kill a demon or two before a demon jumps on her. Things are looking bleak.
Sam is able to turn the tables and stabs the demon with the demon blade. He yells for everyone to stop fighting. There will be no new King of Hell…ever! And if anyone wants the job, they have to go through Sam. The minion demons leave their vessels.
Everyone returns to the bunker. Sam gets a call from Ketch who is in London. He tells Cas that Ketch is looking for the Newton D hyperbolic pulse generator, the device they used to kick Lucifer out of the president. They want to use it to get Michael out of Dean, but they can’t find it.
Cas asks if Sam is okay. Sam says he’s been better. He asks if Cas is okay. Cas says he should have never gone to those demons, but Sam says he wish he thought of it first. If it helped to find Dean, he would do anything.
Mary and Bobby share a beer. Cas checks on Jack. Jack is upset because all he did was get punched in the face. Cas points out that they all got punched in the face. Jack is frustrated because he doesn’t have his powers. Cas says his grace will regenerate in time. Jack says he’s useless. He can’t kill demons, or find Dean. Michael is in their world and he can’t stop him. Jack says he can’t do anything and he has nothing. Cas says that’s not true. Jack has Cas. He has them all…his family. They are going to find Dean and beat Michael. And they will do it together because that’s what they do.
Sam goes to his room to lay down. He takes his phone out of his pocket and lays it on the nightstand. The phone starts buzzing. It’s Jo. She says they have a problem.
Michael is in a warehouse talking to a kid. He says the kid knows exactly what he wants. The Kid doesn’t pretend to want to help people. His want is pure, simple and clean. That’s what makes him worth saving and why they are going to work well together. The kid just wants to eat. The kid smiles, showing Michael his vampire teeth.
I knew Dean/Michael would try to make new friends, but vampires? I know he wants to purify the planet, but working with a evil being is only going to lead to a mess. And that’s how Sam will find him. Michael is sloppy. Well, okay, the reason Sam will find him is because of Jo.
Sam is trying to be so strong for everyone. And as much as Mary is trying to be strong for Sam, he’s so stubborn. Eventually he will break down. He needs to. He needs to start letting Mary and Cas take on some of the responsibility. But he won’t. Dean didn’t when the tables were turned. But then again, Dean didn’t have the team of hunters that Sam has now.
And Nick! He survived! This gives me hope that Dean can survive Michael’s death. I wonder if he remembers Jack? Speaking of Jack, it will be interesting to watch him deal with being human. It’s the best kind of character development. With great power, comes great responsibility. What better way to learn that than to lose the power that made you great.
Overall this episode was compelling and emotional. I could feel Sam’s weariness. Jack’s frustration. Mary’s desperation. As long as they have each other, Sam, Mary, Cas, Jack and Bobby can do anything. I have hope that this ordeal will be over sooner than later. It won’t be easy, but they will get Dean back!
